There are many services that the Industry Services group offers at the Canadian Light Source on a fee-for-service basis.

"The collaborations that we have had with the Industry Services group at the CLS have been necessary to understand the long-term stability of the waste that we generate."

-Joseph Essilfie-Dughan, Senior Geochemist, Orano Canada

MX Services

Home to the Canadian Macromolecular Crystallography Facility (CMCF), the CLS offers advanced capabilities that go beyond protein crystallography, using a highly-productive insertion device beamline (08ID-1), as well as a bending magnet beamline (08B1-1).

We pride ourselves on exceptional service with quick responses and fast turnaround times. Please explore the CMCF website for more information on the beamline capabilites as well as further information on sample management systems, shipping, and more.

If protein crystallography critical for your research, but you lack the time to collect the data yourself, MX Full Service is a suitable option for your needs.

Our experts can efficiently collect high-quality MX data, including crystal screening and full data collection. Simply  ship your samples  to the CLS and let our experts take care of the rest, so that you can focus on the big picture.

Your data can be obtained remotely from our servers, or shipped back to you via an external hard drive sent with your samples.

If you prefer collecting your own MX data, but without the hassle of travelling, MX Remote Access might be the solution for you. Both CMCF beamlines are capable of remote access data collection using our in-house MxLIVE (sample tracking) and MxDC (data collection) software.

Simply ship your samples to the CLS to be pre-loaded for your beamtime by our staff, and you will have the ability to collect data from the comfort of your own office (or wherever you wish). Your data can be obtained remotely from our servers, or shipped back to you via an external hard drive sent with your samples.

Contact us today to book your remote access beamtime.

Full Service

Our dedicated scientists will work with you to develop an experimental outline based on your specific needs. Send the samples and we will do the rest!

Full Service is an option that is available for any technique or application. Offering a complete package for our clients, Full Service includes everthing from experimental design, data collection, data analysis, and a detailed final report.

Whether the client knows little about synchrotron science or has a specific idea of the technique they require, our knowledgable scientists will work with the client to design an experiment that is perfectly tailored to their specific needs.

Contact us with any questions, and we will direct you to the appropriate individuals who will be able to collaboratively solve your problems.

Mail-In Services

If you would you prefer to skip the wait period of general proposal access and just send your samples for analysis,  try our Mail-in program for quick access and expertly collected data!

The Industrial Mail-In program is particularly well-suited for individuals or organizations with specific requirements, including:

  • Limited availability to dedicate time towards writing a proposal and awaiting the review score.
  • The need for a swift turn-around time, typically within a few weeks.
  • A preference for maintaining proprietary control over their work.
  • A desire to ensure the acquisition of the highest quality data by enlisting the expertise of a seasoned scientist.

If you require further work or if you would like to help with data analysis, please contact any member of the Industry Services group for assistance.

Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction is a powerful technique for multiple applications. The Industry Services mail-in program is designed to offer high-quality data with a fast turn-around time.

Synchrotron PXRD provides significantly greater sensitivity and spectral resolution compared to conventional laboratory PXRD, allowing for quantification of dilute phases or phases that are very similar in structure. In our experience, we have found PXRD to be a valuable complementary technique for XANES and EXAFS experiments, giving further insight into the composition of the samples, which helps with perfecting sample preparation and data collection for X-ray absorption experiments.

Our PXRD Mail-in program provides researchers with affordable, rapid access to high-quality data. Please contact our PXRD expert for more information.

For use of our mail-in program, please contact one of our scientists, complete the PXRD form and mail the form with the samples.

Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction is a powerful technique for multiple applications. The Industry Services mail-in program is designed to offer high-quality data with a fast turn-around time.

Small Molecule is a key technique for directly determining the strucuture of small molecules and gaining insights into ligand-receptor interaction in biomedical research and substrate-catalyst interactions in catalyst design.

Our rates for the SM mail-in program are on a per sample basis with an average turn around time of a week. Please contact our on-site expert for more information.

For use of our mail-in program, please contact one of our scientists, complete the Small Molecule form and mail with your samples.

Mid-IR is a useful technique for solving unique industrial problems. The Industry Services mail-in program is designed to offer high-quality data with a fast turn-around time.

Mid-Infrared Spectromicroscopy offers both high-brightness, diffraction-limited spectromicroscopy as well as high special resolution and larger FOV chemical infrared imaging. This technique is ideal for imaging biomedical and biological materials, agricultural samples and other materials such as polymers, art specimens for infrared chemical analysis.

The Mid-IR mail-in program offers researchers the ability to view your sample using proprietary image viewing software, choose your own ROIs and obtain an estimate of time and cost. For more information on the Estimator wizard, click on the link below. For use of this service and contact information please select the Mid IR mail-in form.

Purchased Access

Skip the line and collect data on your own terms.

Purchased access is available for experienced synchrotron users to obtain beamtime on any beamline without the hassle of writing a proposal and waiting for allocation. Typically, this process can take 6-8 months with no guarentee of being awarded time. If you are an expert user and would like to access our facility without the extended wait time, or you would like your research to be proprietary, purchased access beamtime is a suitable solution.

Are you an experienced user who would like to access a beamline without the hassle of writing a proposal? Or maybe you want some supporting evidence to your research? Purchased Access beamtime is available at the beamline of your choice.

Purchased Access beamtime is available to experienced users that would like to expedite the process of accessing their beamline of choice. This option is available for both Academic and Industry clients with previous synchrotron experience.

Contact us for more information on rates and beamtime availability.

In need of specialized sample preparation equipment? Purchased access is available on a suite of offline equipment. Contact us about utilizing CLS equipment.

A suite of offline equipment is available as fee-for-service on-site at the CLS. This service is offered to any interested clients, and does not need to be associated with use of the synchrotron. Please see below for the list of available offline equipment. Knowledgable staff is also available for assistance and training.

  • Ultra microtome (cryo attachment available)
  • Paraffin microtome
  • Cryostat
  • MID IR (offline IR)
