CLS Graduate Student Travel Support Program

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for a travel award you must:
  • Be a graduate student enrolled at a Canadian university or college.
  • Either be conducting your first experiment at the CLS (top priority), or be completing your last experiment at the CLS before graduation and can provide evidence that new data will complete your thesis (second priority).  Applicants who can demonstrate exceptional need will also be considered (third priority).
  • Be included in a proposal that has been allocated beamtime at the CLS.
  • Agree to the Terms of the Travel Award.

Terms of Travel Award:

  • The awards are based on expenses for travel and room accommodation only, up to a maximum of $1500.
  • The CLS will compensate students only for eligible expenses. 
  • Recipients must:
    • Acknowledge this support in any publications about their work and provide the CLS with a copy of such publications, including theses, in the form: (Student name) acknowledges the receipt of support from the CLS Graduate Student Travel Program.
  • Travel must occur within the Cycle for which the award was approved.
  • The award covers a single visit, and only one expense claim can be submitted per award.
  • When a team of researchers is coming to the CLS for beamtime, only one member of the team can receive support from the CLS Graduate Student Travel Program.
  • All claims must be submitted within thirty (30) days of the return from the CLS, using the CLS travel expense form and are subject to the CLS Travel Guidelines, a copy of which will be included with the notification of award.  You must retain all original receipts, including your boarding pass for air travel.

Procedures:

  • There will be two Calls for Applications each year, in June (for the July – December Cycle) and December (for the January – June Cycle)..
  • Awards will be determined on a first come, first served basis, until the funds for that Call are fully allocated.
