General User Access to the Advanced Photon Source – Argonne, Illinois

User time obtained through this mechanism is via competitive peer review two times per year, emphasizing the excellence of science where there is intent to publish scientific results. CLS Call for Proposals Deadlines.

Proposals which are approved for technical feasibility and receive a score between 1 and 4, will be considered ACTIVE and remain active for two years (six APS Cycles).  APS General User proposal deadline.  Active proposals are not re-evaluated.

Proposal Review and Ratings: All new proposals are reviewed for technical feasibility and Peer Review.  Click here for details about the Peer Review evaluation criteria, rating scale, Peer Review Committee and notification of results.  Each proposal is reviewed in depth and scored by one committee member and at least three external reviewers.  The final grade is assigned by the PRC taking into consideration the average of all reviewers’ scores and discussion of the proposal during the PRC meeting.

Beam Time Allocation & Scheduling: Information for proposals requesting beam time at the APS, will be compiled, along with the PRC scores, and sent to the PNCSRF staff for allocation and scheduling. The allocation and scheduling of shifts will be managed by the PNCSRF staff.

Active proposals may request shifts as required anytime throughout the two year timeframe by submitting a PNC Beamtime Request form by the APS Proposal Deadline for the appropriate APS Cycle.  Beamtime requests are prioritized each cycle based on the peer review score received on this proposal. The PNCSRF staff will also take into consideration scientific productivity as indicated by publications resulting from previous beamtime allocated at the APS via the CLS.

Users are responsible for requesting beamtime and following the CLS application process and all APS policies and procedures associated with participating with an experiment.

Users requesting access to the Advanced Photon Source, through the Canadian Light Source, must submit a General User Proposal to the CLS. The user is required to be a registered user at both, the APS and CLS. Once the CLS Peer Review Process has been completed, the user must submit a PNC Request form, to formally request beamtime on any of the APS-XSD sectors.  If the proposal is allocated beamtime, an ESAF must be filled out prior to the experiment at the APS and an End of Experiment Survey completed afterwards.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible to apply for Canadian Access to the APS, the spokesperson must be affiliated with a Canadian institution.

If the spokesperson is a student or postdoctoral fellow, their Scientific Project Leader must be affiliated with a Canadian institution.

Appeals: CLS promotes and encourages open communication between all users of the beamlines at the CLS and at the APS. Appeals relating to proposal ratings and/or allocation will follow the process identified in the Appeals Guidelines.

Submit General User Proposal to CLS

Step 1: Contact Robert Gordon to discuss your research

Step 2: Submit Proposal to CLS – Deadline: February 29, 2012
