Results of the Call

Research time allocated through the General User mechanism is via competitive peer review emphasizing the excellence of science where there is intent to publish scientific results. General User beam time requests are considered twice per year. See Call for Proposals for submission dates.

Macromolecular Crystallography

CLS held its Peer Review Committee (PRC) meeting for Macromolecular Crystallography general user proposals on October 25, 2016.

Each proposal was reviewed and scored by every member of the Peer Review Committee in three categories on a scale of one to five, one being the highest score, five being the lowest. Click here for a detailed description of the evaluation criteria and grading scale.

Scheduling of Beamtime

Users may request beamtime against a General User CMCF proposal at any time while the proposal is active. Applicants have the opportunity to submit a proposal twice per year while the Call is open. Once a proposal a) receives a score between 1 and 4 through peer review, and b) is approved for technical feasibility, safety, and ethics if applicable, it will be considered active for two years (four cycles). If a scheduling conflict arises, priority will be given to higher ranked proposals.

To give CMCF applicants an idea of their competition if they submit a beamtime request, the following chart details the scores of proposals that will be active in the period of January - June, 2017. The coloured bars represent the CLS cycle in which a set of proposals were submitted.

All Other Beamlines

CLS held its Peer Review Committee (PRC) meeting for Cycle 25 (January - June, 2017) general user beamtime on October 27, 2016.

Proposals were reviewed and scored in three categories by one member of the Peer Review Committee and at least two external reviewers on a scale of one to five, one being the highest score, five being the lowest. Reviewers evaluated and scored each proposal in each of the three Evaluation Criteria (scientific merit, suitability and capability of researchers). These scores were averaged and result in the final score for each category. 

Beamtime Allocation Bands: January - June, 2017

The table below lists the number of proposals received and allocated for each beamline. Beamtime was allocated based on each proposal's ranking in scientific merit relative to all other requests for a given beamline. When requests for beamtime on a beamline exceeded available time, the proposals in the range just below the “allocated band” were placed in a “decision band” and were further assessed based on the quality and suitability of the proposed research, as well as the capability of researchers.

Canadian Access to International Synchrotron Facilities – Advanced Photon Source

Proposals submitted for priority Canadian access to the Advanced Photon Source (APS) were included in the Peer Review Meeting on October 27, 2016. CLS@APS proposals were reviewed and scored according to the same criteria as all other beamlines (excluding CMCF) – see above section for details.

Scheduling of Beamtime

Applicants have the opportunity to submit a proposal twice per year while the Call is open. A proposal is considered active once it receives a score between 1 and 4 through peer review, at which point it will be active for two years (six APS cycles). Users have the opportunity to request beamtime against their active proposal three times per year, according to the deadlines set by the APS. Note: When allocating beamtime, the PNCSRF staff will also take into consideration scientific productivity as indicated by publications resulting from previous beamtime allocated at the APS via the CLS.
