Innovation150 comes to Saskatoon

Science is celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday with festivals across Canada. Innovation150 Saskatchewan Festival begins this weekend.

And at the CLS, we are opening our doors for evening and weekend tours: March March 30 at 7 p.m., March 31 at 7 p.m., April 1 at 11 a.m., April 2 at 2 p.m., and April 3 at 7 p.m.


Have your say about future workshops for users

The CLS Users’ Advisory Committee is starting to plan workshops for those who conduct research at the CLS and the members want to know what types of workshops users would like to see offered.

The committee has compiled a short two-minute survey for users. You will also be asked about where and when workshops should be held.

The deadline to complete the survey is April 5.


Researchers pinpoint source of arsenic in water along the Yangtze River

Researchers are unravelling the mysteries of why arsenic levels in water in the Jianghan Plain, off the Yangtze River in China, undergo fluctuations throughout the year.

Sometimes groundwater concentrations in the region exceed the World Health Organization standard of 10 μg L-1, causing a risk of arsenic poisoning for people who rely on wells for drinking water.

“Generally, arsenic is a huge problem in Asian groundwater. A recent report estimated more than 19 million people in China are exposed to unsafe arsenic concentrations,” said Michael Schaefer from the Earth System Science Department at Stanford University, Stanford, Calif.



Research team identifies new markers involved in cancer progression

Scientists have identified, for the first time, increased levels of several chemicals occurring in cancer-activated cells, which will help them understand what is happening in early stage cancer.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canadian women.

Dr. Saroj Kumar, a former University of Saskatchewan researcher, currently at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, led a research team interested in understanding breast cancer metastasis, or how breast cancer spreads.

Nominations close this week for UAC awards

The Users' Advisory Committee of the CLS is accepting nominations for the Allen Pratt, User Support, and Young Investigator Awards. The deadline is this Friday, March 31.

The Allen Pratt Award recognizes outstanding service and dedication to the CLS and the Canadian synchrotron community by a current user or team of users who has made a significant, recent contribution.

The User Support Award is given to a CLS staff member who has provided outstanding help to visiting researchers.  

The Young Investigator Excellence Awardis given to an individual who is an early-career researcher with an excellent publication and/or technical contribution in which the CLS has played a substantial role.


Deadline approaches for 7thAnnual CLS Mx Data Collection School

The deadline for the MX Data Collection School scheduled for June 5 to 9 is less than two weeks away.

Participants will have an intensive hands-on experience that will equip them to effectively collect macromolecular crystal diffraction data both remotely and on-site. They will attend a series of lectures and will actively engage in data collection at CMCF beamlines.

If there is enough interest, an optional introductory crystallography review will be offered June 4.

Deadline to apply is April 10.



Applications open for G. Michael Bancroft PhD Thesis Award

Each year, the CLS presents one user who has completed a PhD in the previous calendar year with the Bancroft Award. The winner receives a plaque and a $3,000 cash prize.

The deadline for submissions is April 21, 2017.





CLS Summer School deadline soon

The CLS Summer School offers hands on, practical experience with various synchrotron techniques, sample preparation, data collection and analysis, proposal writing and case studies. This program is available to students, faculty, and industry scientists who wish to become CLS users.

Participation is limited to 20 people to ensure practical hands-on sessions. 

Date: Aug. 1 to 4
Cost: $400 ($250 for students)
Application deadline: May 4
