CONFERENCE SHINES LIGHT ON MEDICAL USES OF SYNCHROTRONS

Medical researchers and synchrotron scientists from around the world are converging on Saskatoon from August 26 to 30 for the 2007 Medical Applications of Synchrotron Radiation conference (MASR 2007) at the University of Saskatchewan and the Canadian Light Source.

Held every 3 years, the conference is a chance for scientists to discuss the most recent advances in using synchrotron light for medical imaging, studying and treating diseases such as cancer. The conference will also showcase the $17 million BioMedical Imaging and Therapy (BMIT) facility, currently under construction at the Canadian Light Source, as well as the active medical and life science research community at the University of Saskatchewan.

The conference is divided into thematic sessions including general overviews of synchrotron technology and techniques for medical research; using synchrotron light to understand the pathology of diseases; the use of synchrotron light to study and treat cancer; and medical imaging.

A public talk, “Shining Synchrotron Light on Cancer Research,” takes place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28 in the Battleford Room at the Delta Bessborough Hotel. Admission is free.

MASR 2007 is sponsored by the University of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation, the Saskatoon Health Region, the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, the Royal University Hospital Foundation, Loken Engineering, Blake Industries and the Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation.

The Canadian Light Source is Canada’s national centre for synchrotron research. Located on the University of Saskatchewan campus is Saskatoon, the CLS is a powerful tool for academic and industrial research in a wide variety of areas including environmental science, natural resources and energy, health and life sciences, and information and communications technology.
