Canadian Light Source Grand Opening

Media are invited to attend the Grand Opening Ceremony of
the Canadian Light Source synchrotron. Arthur Carty, National Science Advisor
to the Prime Minister, will be Master of Ceremonies. Several hundred dignitaries
from government, universities and industries from across Canada are expected
to attend. Speakers include:
- Ralph Goodale, Federal Minister of Finance
- Lorne Calvert, Premier of Saskatchewan
- Eliot Phillipson, President, Canada Foundation for Innovation
- Peter MacKinnon, President, University of Saskatchewan
- William Thomlinson, Executive Director, Canadian Light Source
The $174-million U of S-owned national facility has been funded by the Canada
Foundation for Innovation, the Canadian government (including Western Economic
Diversification Canada (WD), Natural Resources Canada and the National Research
Council (NRC)), Saskatchewan Industry and Resources, the Ontario Innovation
Trust, the Alberta Science and Research Authority, the Alberta Heritage Foundation
for Medical Research, the U of S, the City of Saskatoon, SaskPower, Boehringer
Ingelheim, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Alberta.
GlaxoSmithKline has also provided funding for a U of S chair in an area of
synchrotron science.
Operating funding comes from Science and Engineering Research Canada (also
known as NSERC), WD, NRC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and
the U of S. To support the development of revenues from commercial fee-for-service
charges, WD and SIR have also provided bridge funding.
