Successful Test of First Insertion Device - March 2004
In this test, X-rays are directed through an insertion device, which contains a series of closely-spaced permanent magnets. As the two “jaws” of the device come together, the energy of the X-rays increases until they exit a beryllium window and strike a scintillating crystal. Beryllium is used as it is transparent to X-rays. The bright horizontal line is produced when the invisible X-rays hit the crystal and produce visible light.
