Governor General visits the CLS,
August 24, 2010

Her Excellency The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, toured the CLS on August 24, 2010. Hosted by CLS Executive Director Josef Hormes, Her Excellency toured the facility, including two CLS beamlines, the Canadian Macromolecular Crystallography Facility (CMCF) and the Biomedical Imaging and Therapy (BMIT) facility, and met with young scientists who are using the CLS in their research.

The Governor General accompanied by CLS Executive Director Josef Hormes and University of Saskatchewan President Peter MacKinnon.

The Governor General spoke with Laura Newton, a grade 12 student at Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon, about the CLS’s Students on the Beamlines program in which she participated last year.


The Governor General spoke with Sarah Thiesson, a second year chemical engineering student at the University of Saskatchewan, about her summer job at the CLS contributing to the design of the BioXAS beamline.


The Governor General also spoke with Michael Gaultois, a Masters student in Chemistry at the University of Saskatchewan, about his research using synchrotron-based techniques to explore the interactions of matter with energy and investigate materials and their properties.
