Contact: clsuo@lightsource.ca

CLS welcomes Dr. Bruce Bunker, University of Notre Dame as a new member to our peer review committee.

The PRC evaluates and scores General User proposals for the use of CLS experimental facilities emphasizing the excellence of science based on: the quality of scientific research in the context of the field (merit); the suitability of CLS resources being allocated relative to the proposed research (suitability); and the quality and capability of the researchers based on their track record (capability). Each proposal is reviewed on some level by all members and in detail by two committee members and at least one external reviewer. Committee members serve a two-year term and the Chair serves a three-year term.

The CLS PRC includes:

  1. Adam Hitchcock, McMaster University (Chair)
  2. Bruce Bunker, University of Notre Dame
  3. Bob McKellar, NRC Stacie Institute for Molecular Sciences
  4. T.K. Sham, University of Western Ontario
  5. John Tse, University of Western Ontario
  6. Jeff Cutler, CLS, Associate Director of Research Industrial Science

3. CLS and French Synchrotron SOLEIL Sign Agreement

The CLS signed a memorandum of understanding with the new French Synchrotron SOLEIL, during a special ceremony held October 5th.  “The Canadian Light Source is very pleased to formalize our relationship with SOLEIL,” says CLS Executive Director William Thomlinson. “Future growth and development at the CLS will advance by sharing expertise in optics and insertion devices with SOLEIL.”

“This is the first step towards creating scientific understanding that will be of mutual benefit to both facilities,” notes Denis Raoux, Director-General of SOLEIL and co-signatory of the agreement with Dr. Thomlinson. “There are many unique opportunities at the Canadian Light Source that do not exist at SOLEIL.”

This is the third MOU to be signed by the CLS and another synchrotron in the last 18 months. Other agreements have included an MOU with the Australian Synchrotron involving research into medical imaging and applications of synchrotron light to the mining sector, and an agreement with the Italian Sincrotrone ELETTRA for the development of a life science imaging program.

5. Information and Communication Technology News
Contact: skeeter.abellsmith@lightsource.ca

The ICT team has recently increased storage for user data acquisition and added external data access for each experiment. External access to the increased storage will improve as firewall upgrades are completed in the coming weeks.

With the completion of the wireless VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) telephone pilot project, work has begun towards enhancing services for more phones and CLS notebooks, with the aim to support wireless networking for visitors. The new Virtual Private Network (VPN) services allow staff to access internet services normally and securely while simultaneously using the CLS network, all from off-site, using almost any broadband connection.
