2. 2008 ACTIVITY REPORT: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Contact: mailto:activity.report@lightsource.ca

The Canadian Light Source Activity Report communicates the exciting research and development activity of Canada’s national synchrotron facility to the wider scientific community. This edition of the CLS Activity Report summarizes the progress made at the CLS in the areas of scientific research and facility development and operations from January 1 to December 31, 2008.

The key to a successful report is input from our users. All users who conducted research at the CLS during 2008 are invited to submit a short article for the science section of the report. Users wishing to contribute an article should e-mail the editor at the above contact with their intent to submit by Monday, December 15, 2008. Further information, including submission guidelines and templates are available at http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/activity_report.php. The deadline for submissions is January 26, 2009.

3. SCIENCE HIGHLIGHT: EXPRESSION, PURIFICATION AND PRELIMINARY CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF N-ACETYLGLUCOSAMINE-1-PHOSPHATE URIDYLYLTRANSFERASE FROM MYCOBACTERIUM TUBERCULOSIS
Contact: mailto:michael.james@ualberta.ca

The gene product of open reading frame Rv1018c from Mycobacterium tuberculosis is annotated as encoding a probable N-acetylgucosamine 1-phosphate uridylyltransferase (MtbGlmU), an enzyme that catalyzes the biosynthesis of UDP-N-acetylglucosamine, a precursor common to lipopolysaccharide and peptidoglycan biosynthesis. Following overexpression in Escherichia coli, the enzyme was purified and crystallized using the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method. Native diffraction data were collected from crystals belonging to space group R32 and processed to a resolution of 2.2 angstroms.

5. CLS USER FEATURED IN CIHR ANNUAL REPORT
Contact: mailto:matthew.dalzell@lightsource.ca

The research of Dr. Helen Nichol, an associate professor at the University of Saskatchewan and Chair of the CLS Users’ Advisory Committee, is featured in the 2007-08 Annual Report of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Dr. Nichol’s investigation into the causes of neurodegenerative diseases using synchrotron radiation is one compelling example of the science conducted at the CLS, of which CIHR is a funding partner.

The CIHR 2007-2008 Annual Report, “Portraits in Partnerships” is available for download from the CIHR website at http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/documents/cihr_annual_report_2007-08_e.pdf.
