1. From the Research Director’s Desk:
November – The Meeting Month
Contact: thomas.ellis@lightsource.ca

In the past, November was the month that focused on our Users’ Meeting.  Now that it has been moved to June, it seems that every other meeting has moved in to fill its place!  We started on November 1st with a Board of Directors meeting, followed the following week with the Life Sciences Theme Workshop, the Fall 2007 SAC Meeting, and the Cycle 7 Peer Review Committee (PRC) Meeting.  Some of us then jumped on a plane to attend a meeting in Montreal (organized by Mark Sutton) on Saturday, November 10th.

Since then, most of us have coasted through to the end of the month, with only the Allocation Committee meeting, and the UAC face-to-face meeting.  But during this period Bill and others have been spending a lot of time on airplanes, attending numerous meetings in Ottawa as they continue to advance the funding renewal file.

In the meantime, those of us who have not been spending their lives in meetings brought the facility back online (after having successfully installed and tested the BMIT wiggler, as well as many other important activities), and we are now more than halfway through a 6 week run period that will take us to the Christmas shutdown.  So in the end, November is really about users doing great science, and that’s the way it should be.

2. General User Proposal Results: January-June, 2008
Contact: clsuo@lightsource.ca

CLS held its Peer Review Committee (PRC) meeting on November 8/9, chaired by Adam Hitchcock (McMaster University). The PRC reviewed general user proposals for beamtime available during January-June, 2008.

Six Phase I beamlines participated in this call (all except CMCF).  78 new proposals were received (up from 65), along with 22 beam time requests against existing proposals.  A total of 894 shifts were requested, with 666 shifts available.  The PRC rated the new proposals on a scale of one to five, one being the highest score.   Beam time was allocated to 59 proposals based on each proposal's ranking in relation to all other proposals for a given beamline. A cut-off score was assigned if the total requests for beam time on one beamline exceeded the time available.

This edition of the CLS Activity Report will summarize the progress made at the CLS in the areas of scientific research and facility development and operations from January 1 to December 31, 2007.

The key to a successful report is input from our users. All users who conducted research at the CLS during 2007 are invited to submit a short article (maximum of 800 words) for the science section of the report. Users wishing to contribute an article should e-mail the editor at the above contact with their intent to submit by December 17, 2007.
