1.- Bill's bulletin: CLS turns lights on!

As a lot of you will know, October 2004 marked our official opening. An amazing effort was organized by CLS staff and our colleagues at the University of Saskatchewan, SREDA, the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Saskatoon to commemorate this momentous occasion.

From the talks delivered by researchers in different disciplines on campus and at the local public library and the official opening ceremony held on October 20th, from our public Open House on October 30th (which saw almost 3,500 people tour our facility), to the outstanding media coverage which reached almost 4 million people across Canada and the world, I am happy to say we achieved our objective-to ensure as wide an audience as possible knows about the opening of this national research tool!

I was especially pleased that representatives from synchrotrons around the world attended (ALS, APS, CAMD, HASYLAB at DESY, ESRF, and NSLS) to welcome us to the global synchrotron family.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire CLS synchrotron community for its outstanding effort and dedication over the last 5 years to design and build what surely will be one of the most exciting research tools in the world.

2.- First Experimental Data at the CLS

(Contact: yongfeng.hu@lightsource.ca)

On the eve of its grand opening, the CLS reached another in a series of significant milestones, with the collection on October 16th of the first experimental data on the Variable Line Spacing Plane Grating Monochromator (VLS-PGM) beamline designed to deliver photons ranging from 5.1 to 250 eV with a resolving power of 10,000.

The data was collected with the medium-energy grating (25-120 eV) during the last commissioning time. It involved some preliminary gas-phase absorption spectra of noble gases (xenon and krypton). The resulting spectra were favorable compared with measurements from other synchrotrons that have been recently published in the scientific literature.

The resulting comparisons are extremely exciting, even before optimization is completed, with the estimated resolution approaching the design specifications.

3.- MOU signed between CLS and ESRF

On November 5, our Director, Bill Thomlinson, was in Grenoble signing a memorandum of understanding with William G. Stirling and Helmut Krech from ESRF.

The MOU creates the foundation for future technical and scientific collaboration between the CLS and ESRF, such as those to be undertaken in the design and construction of the CLS BioMedical Imaging and Therapy beamline. It is anticipated that this kind of cooperation will significantly accelerate the project, drawing on the biomedical experience at the ESRF.

Longer term possibilities include personnel exchanges and the undertaking of advanced projects such as detector design and development.

4.- Frontiers of Synchrotron X-ray Scattering: A Symposium and Workshop Exploring New Directions in X-ray Scattering for Canada

(Contact: gaulin@mcmaster.ca)

Friday and Saturday, December 3 and 4, 2004
McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario

This symposium will feature presentations on cutting edge applications of synchrotron x-ray scattering to the science of materials. It will also serve as a forum for discussion aimed at proposing a suite of x-ray scattering infrastructure for the Canadian Light Source. If you are interested in synchrotron x-ray scattering in Canada, please plan to attend.

Scientists at all levels of seniority (students, postdocs, senior scientists) are most welcome. There is no registration fee.

For more information, and to register, please go to: http://www.lightsource.ca/enews/frontiers.php

8.- Introducing new staff and now hiring

(Contact: nancy.fetch@lightsource.ca)

CLS continues to add new faces to the employee contingent. We would like to welcome Dr. Kim Tan, Staff Scientist in our Experimental Facilities Department. Kim joined us from Wisconsin, where he was the Floor Coordinator at the synchrotron in Madison.

Jennifer Ritchie joins the CLS Business Development team for an eight month work placement as part of the Westlink Internship Program. The objective of the program is to provide young professionals with training in workplaces dealing with technology development and commercialization. Jennifer will be with us until May 2005.

The Engineering and Technical Services Department has undergone a few changes in personnel over the last two months. Terry Johnson has been appointed Acting Manager for a one year term in the Engineering and Technical Services Department, replacing Dan Lowe, who moved to Calgary mid-October. Further to this change, the department has added two new Mechanical Engineers, Mike Kirkham and Henry Yee. Both Mike and Henry worked at Corning Cable Systems together prior to the plant closure in 2002. Henry replaces Jeremy Ransom who also made a move to Calgary in October to be with his fiancé. Darwin Taylor has been hired as a Mechanical Designer, replacing Chad Sewell who left us to pursue an Engineering Degree. Darwin previously worked as a CAD/CAM Technologist at Wardrop Engineering in Saskatoon. Larry Wiebe, who is no stranger to the CLS, has joined the department as a Research Technologist (Vacuum Specialist). Larry was previously working with Allen Construction for the last year and a half at the CLS.

In the Controls and Instrumentation Department, CLS would like to welcome Doug Starnes as a Research Technologist. As a Journeyman Electrician, Doug has also been working on-site for the last couple of years with one of our contractors, Bridge City Electric.

Tim Ambrus joined the HSE Department in November as a Health, Safety and Environment Technician. Tim is from Saskatoon and was formerly working at ERCO Worldwide, a chemical manufacturing company.

We are now looking to fill an Accelerator Physicist position: Reporting to the Manager of Accelerator Operations & Development, the successful candidate will work as part of a team to participate in the operation and development of the CLS accelerator systems.
