1. BIOBUSINESS ALLIANCE OF MINNESOTA AND CLS SIGN AGREEMENTContact: mailto:royal.hinther@lightsource.ca
A Memorandum of Agreement signed May 19th between the BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota (BBAM) and the Canadian Light Source (CLS) aims to bring the power of synchrotron light to Minnesota's academic and industrial life science researchers. Both institutions will work together to promote the value of combining Minnesota's world-leading life science network with the cutting-edge imaging and analytical capabilities of the CLS to advance research and innovation in the areas of renewable energy, agriculture, industrial bioproducts, and medical devices and products.
BBAM will promote the synchrotron's techniques in biomedical imaging, crystallography and spectroscopy to its network of researchers from academic and industrial institutions throughout the United States. The CLS will provide access to its synchrotron facility to researchers from BBAM's stakeholder groups as well as host graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and scientists from Minnesota industry and academia to perform research.

2. NOMINATIONS FOR CLS USERS' ADVISORY COMMITTEE - DEADLINE JUNE 28
Contact: mailto:sdesgren@uottawa.ca
The Users' Advisory Committee (UAC) is seeking nominations from the CLS user community for the election of two new members for the September 2010 to August 2013 term, and one student member for the September 2010 to August 2012 term. The UAC is currently composed of 12 members from various locations, disciplines, scientific sectors, and techniques. Members can come from university, industry or government. The committee would like to achieve a balanced representation of the user community. This year, three members are leaving the committee, and we would like to encourage diversity in terms of region, discipline, sector and techniques. Current membership demographics can be viewed at http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/demographics_2010
The UAC provides advice to the Executive Director on the operation and management of the synchrotron and its beamlines; represents the interests of CLS users; provides feedback to CLS management on various aspects of the development and operation of CLS; assists CLS in providing feedback to users about CLS-related issues and plans, and hosts the CLS User's Meetings with assistance from CLS.
For further details on UAC membership, terms of reference, election process, past meeting minutes, and meetings, please visit http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/
Nominations will be accepted until Monday, June 28th, 2010.
Please forward your nominations to Serge Desgreniers (sdesgren@uottawa.ca), Vice-Chair, or any member of the UA: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/membership.php or clsuac@lightsource.ca
Details on the election process, to be held July 12-16, will be forthcoming.

4. SYNCHROTRON-HEALTH FELLOWSHIPS BEING SOLICITED THROUGH CIHR-THRUST
Contact: mailto:thrust@artsandscience.usask.ca
CIHR Training Grant in Health Research Using Synchrotron Techniques (CIHR-THRUST) is a new cross-disciplinary training program to develop and use synchrotron techniques to address key questions in Canadian health research. Centred at the University of Saskatchewan and the CLS, CIHR-THRUST will train more than 50 of the next generation of Canadian synchrotron health researchers between 2009 and 2015.
CIHR-THRUST is currently soliciting applications for CIHR-THRUST Fellowships at the masters, doctoral or postdoctoral level. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010 at noon. An application form may be requested by contacting Delilah Kostuk, CIHR-THRUST Program Coordinator, at thrust@artsandscience.usask.ca

5. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT: IMAGING NITROGEN IN INDIVIDUAL CARBON NANOTUBES
Contact: mailto:jigang.zhou@lightsource.ca, mailto:jian.wang@lightsource.ca, mailto:tsham@uwo.ca
Semiquantitative chemical imaging of the spatial distribution of nitrogen in a carbon matrix, adsorbed/intercalated N2, and highly concentrated N2 in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) with a spatial resolution of 30 nm has been obtained by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM). The local electronic structures of individual N-CNTs at C and N K-edges have been extracted from STXM image stacks (sensitive to bulk) and compared with that of N-CNT using X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy in total electron yield mode (sensitive to surface). The polarization-dependent STXM measurement has revealed the preferred orientation of N2, parallel to the N-CNT long axis.
