5. SCIENCE HIGHLIGHT: NANOSCALE CHEMICAL IMAGING OF THE REDUCTION BEHAVIOR OF A SINGLE CATALYST PARTICLE

Contact: mailto:f.m.f.degroot@uu.nl  or mailto:b.m.weckhuysen@uu.nl

Iron-based catalysts for the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis bring about the conversion of synthesis gas (CO/H2) derived from coal or biomass into liquid transportation fuels. In their Communication, B. M. Weckhuysen, F. M. F. de Groot, and co-workers provide insights into the difference in behavior of the catalyst precursors during pretreatment in H2 on both the nanoscopic and the bulk scale. These findings enable further understanding of how the activated catalyst works.

Investigation of the reduction properties of a single Fischer-Tropsch catalyst particle, using in situ scanning transmission X-ray microscopy with spatial resolution of 35 nm, reveals a heterogeneous distribution of Fe(0), Fe(II), and Fe(III) species. Regions of different reduction properties are defined and explained on the basis of local chemical interactions and catalyst morphology.

E. de Smit, I. Swart, J. F. Creemer, C. Karunakaran, D. Bertwistle, H. W. Zandbergen, F. M. F. de Groot, and B M. Weckhuysen. Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 48, 3632 –3636 (2009); DOI:10.1002/anie.200806003

6. NEW STAFF AND NOW HIRING

Contact: mailto:nancy.fetch@lightsource.ca

Welcome to all our Summer Students who will be with us for the next four months.

Mike MacDonald, VLS-PGM Research Associate started his career at Daresbury with an interest in atomic and molecular physics, Over the years, as he looked after the beamlines, he spent more effort in getting the best out of the beamlines and instruments than the science, although he continued to keep in touch with the science. Mike’s present interests now are mainly in the area of instrumentation science and beamline optics.

Christopher Ryan, VLS-PGM Science Associate.  After having worked part-time for the Canadian Light Source Inc (CLSI) for three years with the Bio Medical Imaging Therapy (BMIT) beamlines and knowing the CLSI's ethical and technological attributes, Chris’ experience will be a strong asset to the VLS-PGM beamline.

Dong Liu, Control Systems Analyst/Engineer – Web Services. Dong recently joined the CLS from the University of Saskatchewan where he was a teaching and research assistant, while completing his PhD in Computer Science.

We are currently accepting applications for the following positions:
