1. New CLS Executive Director Appointed
The Board of Directors of Canadian Light Source, Inc. and University of Saskatchewan President Peter MacKinnon are pleased to announce the appointment of Josef Hormes as the next executive director of the Canadian Light Source (CLS), effective August 15, 2008.
The appointment comes after an 18-month international search for the successor to CLS Executive Director Bill Thomlinson, who is retiring at the end of June.
“We are extremely pleased that Dr. Hormes has accepted the position of Executive Director of the CLS,” says Rafik Loutfy, Acting Chair of the CLS Board of Directors. “Dr. Hormes is internationally recognized, both as a synchrotron light researcher and as a science leader who builds bridges between academic and industrial research.”
Hormes, currently a professor of physics at the University of Bonn, was director of the Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD), a synchrotron at the Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge from 1999 to 2005, where he remains a full professor of research. Prior to that, he was director of the Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory at the University of Bonn, where he was also responsible for technology transfer and university/industry collaborations.
“Professor Hormes’ combination of research expertise and management experience is second to none,” notes University of Saskatchewan president Peter MacKinnon. “He is ideally suited to guide Canada’s national synchrotron as it embarks on the next phase of its life as a global leader in innovation and discovery.”

2. General User Proposal Results: July - December, 2008
Contact: mailto:clsuo@lightsource.ca
CLS held its 5th Peer Review Committee (PRC) meeting on May 8/9, chaired by Tony Van Buuren (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory). The PRC reviewed general user proposals for beamtime available during July-December, 2008.
Five Phase I beamlines participated in this call. 68 new proposals were received, along with 22 beam time requests against existing proposals. A total of 882 shifts were requested, with 505 shifts available.
The PRC rated the new proposals on a scale of one to five, one being the highest score. Beam time was allocated to 58 proposals based on each proposal's ranking in relation to all other proposals for a given beamline. A cut-off score was assigned if the total requests for beam time on one beamline exceeded the time available.

3. CISR Travel Grants for CLS Summer School III
Contact: mailto:tracy.walker@lightsource.ca
The Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation (CISR) is providing a few travel grants for Summer School III. Application forms for the school as well as the travel grant are available online. The early-bird application deadline is June 20.
This school has been developed for students and researchers interested in adding synchrotron techniques to their research skill set. The program aims to take participants from the basics of synchrotron operation and techniques, through to cutting-edge scientific talks, building up knowledge so that attendees are then capable of obtaining and using synchrotron beamtime.
We are also pleased to announce that the program now includes newly appointed CLS Executive Director, Dr. Josef Hormes, presenting a history of synchrotron radiation

4. A High Throughput SAXS Beamline for Biology
Contact: Brian Shilton mailto:bshilton@uwo.ca
A New Infrastructure Fund proposal for a biological Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) beamline will be submitted to the CFI in October. The focus of the proposed beamline will be the collection of SAXS data from solutions of proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids. Operation of the beamline for solution SAXS measurements will include a “high throughput” mode that involves automated data collection using a fixed endstation configuration. The beamline can also be used for experiments from semi-solid, solid, or fibrous samples.
A request for “National Project” status has been submitted to the CFI, and the beamline is currently in the design and budgeting stage.
If you would like to collaborate in this project, please contact Brian Shilton, Department of Biochemistry, University of Western Ontario.

5. New Staff and Now Hiring
Contact: mailto:jobs@lightsource.ca
Rami Sankari, VLS/PGM Research Associate: Rami came from the Department of Physics at the University of Turku. He became familiar with synchrotrons during his PhD studies. Over time, he has become more interested in hardware related to synchrotron radiation, including different endstation instruments and the beamlines themselves. Rami would like to become an expert on synchrotron radiation excited spectroscopy and related instrumentation. (Rami’s project is the result of collaboration with the University of Windsor and the University of Western Ontario.)
Tor Pedersen, IR Science Associate: During graduate studies at the University of Saskatchewan, Tor gained considerable experience working at two synchrotron facilities — the ALS in Berkeley, and the CLS. Tor has seen first-hand the dedication required to run a successful beamline and is eager to be part of the continued development of CLS.
Igor D’Angelo, CMCF Science Associate: During the past three and a half years, Igor has worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in structural and computational biology. After ten years as a regular user of synchrotrons in Europe and North America, and with a diverse background in using multiple structural investigation tools in many different projects, Igor feels that this is an excellent opportunity to contribute to CLS. (This position is co-funded by the NSERC/CIHR grant to the Consortium of Protein Crystallographers from Eastern Canada, and by the Biotechnology Research Institute, NRC).
Dionne Laprairie, Receptionist: Dionne is thrilled to be part of our team. Her experience, organizational and interpersonal skills will be an asset to the Administrative Group.
We are currently accepting applications for the following positions:
- VLS-PGM Science Associate
- Guest Services Attendant
- QMSC Staff Scientist
- Industrial Scientist (Term)
- VESPERS Science Associate
