1. Liquid Helium Leak Cancels Runs 33 and 34
Contact: tom.ellis@lightsource.ca or Mark.deJong@lightsource.ca
On Wednesday, May 2nd CLS staff discovered a leak in the liquid helium transfer line from the cryogenics plant to the top of the storage ring. Regrettably, this leak resulted in the cancelling of user shifts for May and June.
The leak was detected during the cool down of the superconducting radiofrequency cavity. Over the next week, personnel in the CLS accelerator and technical services group worked diligently to isolate the problem to the gaseous helium return line within the 50 m long vacuum jacketed transfer line. CLSI then worked with the manufacturer to rearrange the full schedule of the company’s expert technician, obtaining the earliest possible arrival date of May 22.
Last Thursday, May 24th, the leak was successfully isolated to a component within the return line in a section just outside of the CLS building. A repair plan was developed, with the installation of replacement parts scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 30th.
However, due to the time required to make and test the repair, clean and recondition the transfer line, restart the cryogenics plant and radiofrequency system, carry out cool down and condition the ring to 250 mA, it was concluded that the CLS would be unable to ensure the delivery of beam of sufficient quality for normal user operations before the last week in June. It has thus been decided to cancel all user shifts for the remainder of June and resume normal operations at the start of Cycle 6, which begins in July.
We regret the inconvenience this situation has caused and will continue to provide further updates to our users as more information becomes available. We are grateful for the patience and understanding we have received from the affected users. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the User Services Office.

2. General User Proposal Results – July-December, 2007
Contact: clsuo@lightsource.ca
CLS held its third Peer Review Committee (PRC) meeting on May 16, chaired by Adam Hitchcock (McMaster University). The PRC reviewed general user proposals for beamtime available during July-December, 2007.
65 new proposals and 21 continuing requests were received during this call: 4 for 02B1-1 (Far-IR), 27 for 06ID-1 (HXMA), 19 for 10ID-1 (SM), 24 for 11ID-1 (SGM) and 12 for 11ID-2 (PGM). The PRC rated the new proposals on a scale of one to five, one being the highest score, five being the lowest.
Beamtime was allocated to 43 proposals based on each proposal's ranking in relation to all other proposals for a given beamline. A cut-off grade was assigned if the total requests for beamtime on one beamline exceeded available time. Please note that due to repairs to the faulty helium transfer line, the current allocation is based on a five month period from August to December. If the month of July is available for general user shifts, the cut-off scores may be amended and additional proposals awarded beam time.

6. Users’ Meeting 2007 Q. & A. Session- Questions Wanted
Contact: h.nichol@usask.ca or regan.wilks@usask.ca
In preparation for the CLS Users’ Meeting, the Users’ Advisory Committee would like to solicit questions, comments and problems that will be addressed at the lunchtime Q. and A. session at the upcoming Users’ Meeting. Questions will also be taken from the floor if time permits. We would particularly like to receive questions and comments from those who have used the beamlines for data collection and those who have applied for beamtime.
The following topics will be dealt with as part of the meeting agenda and there will be opportunities to ask questions of CLS management.
- Phase 1, 2 and 3 updates and current operations
- Update on ring status
- Beamtime allocation and peer review
Please forward your questions and comments to UAC members, Helen Nichol (h.nichol@usask.ca) or Regan Wilks (regan.wilks@usask.ca).

9. Notes from the UAC
Contact: ernst.bergmann@ualberta.ca or ingrid.pickering@usask.ca
The most important concern of the CLS users at this point is obviously the forced shutdown of the facility due to the problem with the helium supply of the RF cavity. The UAC has met with CLS management and we can report that the efforts to get the facility up and running again are their highest priority. The communication to the users who lost beam time due to the shutdown was handled well and as fast as possible. There may be a chance for rescheduling of some lost beam time but that cannot be done until the duration of the shutdown becomes clear. The UAC will remain involved in the discussions about the rescheduling. Any user who has concerns about the shutdown, the communication of the problem or rescheduling should bring them to the attention of the UAC.
The chair and vice-chair of the UAC attended the recent SAC meeting as observers. Notable from this meeting was the satisfaction of all involved with the progress of Phase II development. The Phase II beamline projects are so far progressing very well and some beamlines are on track to start commissioning this year.
Those of you who have been to the CLS recently may have noticed the first changes as a result of the work of the committee to enhance the work environment. Thanks to Steven Urquhart and all the CLS staff for their efforts.
