1. General User Proposal Scores Posted for Beamtime - Jul. – Dec. 2006
Contact: clsuo@lightsource.ca

CLS held its first Peer Review Committee (PRC) meeting on May 15 for general user proposals that were submitted in March 2006 for beamtime July – December, 2006. Thirty-two proposals were received during this call (22 SGM and 10 for the PGM). The PRC rated proposals on a scale of one to five, one being the highest score, five being the lowest.

Beamtime was allocated based on each proposal's ranking in relation to all other proposals for a given beamline. A cut-off grade was assigned if the total requests for beamtime on one beamline exceeded available time, otherwise, all requests for beamtime were granted.

To view details on the results see http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/results_of_call.php

After June 9 th registration will be available on site at the AUM.

This meeting, organized by the Users' Advisory Committee of the Canadian Light Source, will be held in conjunction with the 3rd Northern Lights Summer Conference of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies June 14-16, 2006. The theme of the Northern Lights conference is “Shining Light on Biological Processes”. For more information and to register visit http://www.cfbs.org/annual49Introd.html

The main CLS meeting will feature talks highlighting CLS-based research activities including presentations by Helen Nichol (University of Saskatchewan), Allen Pratt (Natural Resources Canada), Jeanne Percival (Natural Resources Canada, Geological Survey of Canada), T.K. Sham (University of Western Ontario), and Regan Wilks (University of Saskatchewan).

As well, we have an exciting line-up of international speakers covering a wide range of hot scientific topics including: John Bargar (Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory), Giacomo Ghiringhelli (Politecnico di Milano) and Ralf-Hendrik Menk (Sincrotrone ELETTRA). From Canada’s thriving synchrotron community speakers include Andrea Damascelli (University of British Columbia) and Paul Scott (University of Alberta).

Featured also will be a special presentation on the subject of “Research Funding in Canada” by Isabelle Blain, Vice-President Research Grants and Scholarships, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

June 16th joint workshops will include:

  • Molecular Form & Function: Probing Intact Tissues using Synchrotron Light
  • Synchrotron Protein Crystallography
  • New Instrumentation for Soft X-ray Photon-In-Photon-Out Spectroscopy
  • Synchrotron and Advanced Analytical Techniques in the Forensic Sciences
  • Terahertz (THz) Workshop

3. Saskatoon Synchrotron Summer School (SSSSI) – Early Registration Closes June 15
Contact: Tracy.walker@lightsource.ca

The CLS will host its first summer school from Aug. 1 to 4, 2006. The school aims to provide graduate, post-doctoral and senior undergraduate students with synchrotron-specific knowledge and skills applicable to their research.

In this first year, the program will cover topics such as the production and properties of synchrotron radiation, an overview of CLS current and future beamlines, and lectures on synchrotron applications to a number of scientific disciplines (protein crystallography, infra-red, photoemission spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy). Students will also obtain hands-on experience in data collection and data analysis.

Details, including registration information, are available at http://www.lightsource.ca/education/summerschool.

4. Last Insertion Device Installed and Operating
Contact: les.dallin@lightsource.ca

The last of the “Phase I” insertion devices, the elliptically polarizing undulator (EPU) was installed in the storage ring in early May. During the May run (run 24) the EPU was set to a variety of magnet gaps and polarizations. The impact on the storage ring was as expected, i.e., the device had only small impact on the stored beam and any changes can be corrected by the built-in correction coils and the storage ring quadrupoles.

A variety of “chicane” angles were tried in an effort to optimize the transport of photons down the Spectromicroscopy (SM) beamline. Detailed commissioning of the SM beamline is now underway.

6. CNSC Renews Operating Licence for CLS
Contact: mohamed.benmerrouche@lightsource.ca

Following a public hearing held on March 30, 2006, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced, on May 15 th 2006, its decision to renew the Particle Accelerator Operating Licence for Canadian Light Source Inc.’s (CLSI) Canadian Light Source (CLS) facility. The licence is valid until May 31, 2012.

In their conclusion, CNSC staff indicated that CLS operation has demonstrated very low risk to CLS staff, the public and the environment during previous licence period. Second, that CLSI has in place effective compliance programs assessed and accepted by CNSC staff for protecting the health and safety of staff, the public and the environment. Third, CLSI has demonstrated a consistent good record of safety performance and compliance with the applicable regulatory requirements in carrying out the licence activities during the licence period.
