1. Bill’s Bulletin: A Royal Visit and Our First User!
May 2005 will be a memorable month for us all. On May 19th we had the honour
of hosting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke
of Edinburgh. Over a period of 45 minutes I led a tour where the Queen met
several synchrotron scientists conducting research associated with cancer,
Alzheimer’s disease and zoonotics, areas of research she is particularly
interested in. His Royal Highness met CLS scientists who showed him images
of a protein structure mapped using SR as well as a simulation of an environmental
sample being analyzed at our hard x-ray beamline. It was a very successful
event- an estimated 1,000 people came to view the royal couple upon their
exit from the CLS and newspapers around the world (from Canada to Qatar!)
reported on their visit to our synchrotron.
Last week we also welcomed our first SR user: Allen Pratt, from NRCAN's
CANMET Labs. In addition to helping us christen the Plane Grating Monochromator
beamline, Dr. Pratt's research could lead to more environment-friendly ways
to separate gold from raw ore. For more information on this important milestone

2. First beam out of the Far Infrared beamline port
Contact: tim.may@lightsource.ca
The first call for proposals for the infrared beamlines in the second cycle
was sent out and several groups have submitted experiment requests. The commissioning
phase will begin soon as the remaining beamline components are placed and
aligned.
The infrared beamlines had bellows spool chambers and diamond UHV windows
installed in the two weeks prior to the Queen's visit. These were the last
parts needed to connect the beamline UHV chambers to the ring and its IR
mirror chambers. Upon restarting the ring May 19th, the first beam on a positioning
target was observed in the Far IR beamline. The Far IR beamline had its first
light from the synchrotron steered out of the UHV port on May 21 at 12:20
pm. This is a major milestone on the way to completing the beamline for commissioning.
The Mid IR beamline is expected to see its first light within a week as control
systems to move the mirrors and targets are completed.

3. First monochromatic light in Hard X-ray Micro-Analysis (HXMA)
beamline
Contact: detong.jiang@lightsource.ca
In the first week of this month the Hard X-ray Micro-Analysis (HXMA) beamline
staff obtained monochromatic x-rays at the end of the beamline. A preliminary
Cu K-edge spectrum was obtained. This is a major milestone in facility development
for the beamline staff and the XAFS/microprobe/powder diffraction user community.
This success was achieved through the hard work and dedication of many members
of the CLS staff who assisted in the commissioning efforts.

CLS Educational Outreach is preparing to present the first Synchrotron Summer
Workshop for Teachers featuring presentations by several CLS staff and Users,
as well as providing lessons and activities to make synchrotron science accessible
in the classroom.
More details, including registration information, can be found at http://www.lightsource.ca/education.

Plan now to attend the 8th Annual CLS Users' Meeting and Associated Workshops
to be held November 18-20th, 2005, on the University of Saskatchewan campus.
If you are interested in holding an Associated Workshop to highlight your
favourite field of synchrotron research or current and future beamlines at
the CLS, the time to start planning is now! The Users’ Advisory Committee
of the CLS (UAC) will provide support for approved workshops, including space
and food as well as funding up to $5,000. Contact the UAC TODAY for more
details – contact information is available at http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/
