2. First Diffraction in the CMCF Beamline

3. Province of Saskatchewan Announces BMIT Funding

The University of Saskatchewan received more than $6.2 million on March 20 from the province’s Innovation and Science Fund for the Biomedical Imaging and Therapy beamline (BMIT) at the Canadian Light Source synchrotron. The funding matches federal funding provided by the Canada Foundation for Innovation.

"This new beamline will increase construction jobs that will boost the local economy," Advanced Education and Employment Minister Pat Atkinson said. “It will also increase the number of research-related jobs that attract world-class faculty and provide important opportunities for graduate students."

5. Users’ Meeting 2006 - Online Registration Now Open!

Early bird online registration for the 2006 Annual User’s Meeting, June 16-18, 2006 is now open at http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2006/

Make sure you register before May 1st to save $$!!

The main meeting will feature talks highlighting CLS-based research activities including presentations by Helen Nichol (University of Saskatchewan), Allen Pratt (Natural Resources Canada), Jeanne Percival (Natural Resources Canada, Geological Survey of Canada), T.K. Sham (University of Western Ontario) and Regan Wilks (University of Saskatchewan). 

As well, we have an exciting line-up of international speakers covering a wide range of hot scientific topics including: John Bargar (Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory), Giacomo Ghiringhelli (Politecnico di Milano) and Ralf-Hendrik Menk (Sincrotrone ELETTRA). From Canada’s thriving synchrotron community speakers include Andrea Damascelli (University of British Columbia) and Paul Scott (University of Alberta).

Featured also will be a special presentation on the subject of “Research Funding in Canada” by Isabelle Blain, Vice-President Research Grants and Scholarships, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

This year’s meeting will be held in conjunction with the 3rd Northern Lights Summer Conference of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies June 14-16, 2006—joint workshop sessions will be held on June 16. The theme of the Northern Lights conference is “Shining Light on Biological Processes”. The June 16th joint workshops will include:

7.Saskatoon Synchrotron Summer School (SSSI) - August 1-4, 2006

CLS’s first summer school will take place between August 1 and 4, 2006. The school aims to provide upper-year undergraduate and graduate university students with synchrotron-specific knowledge and skills applicable to their research.

In this first year, the program will focus on synchrotron experimental techniques in IR, soft x-rays and hard x-rays. Students will also obtain hands-on experience in data collection and data analysis.
