1. RESULTS OF RECENT CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Contact: clsuo@lightsource.ca
Eleven beamlines participated in the recent Call for Proposals, resulting in seven requests for Macromolecular Crystallography, and 183 requests for other beamlines (118 new proposals and 65 beam time requests against existing proposals). The proposals are currently undergoing the review process; protein crystallography applicants will be notified of results during the week of May 9, and the results for all other beamlines will be available the week of May 23.
Timeframes and beamlines that participated in the call can be viewed at:

2. NEW CLS WEBSITE LAUNCHED
Contact: mailto:webmaster@lightsource.ca
We have spent the last couple of months updating the layout and navigation of our public website, www.lightsource.ca to make it easier for our users and stakeholders to find the information they are looking for.
The guiding criteria for the changes we made were primarily focused on our users: what they are looking for and how we help them better find it? In addition, we attempted to center less on mirroring our internal departmental structure and focus more on what the end user needs to find. Lastly, we are still working on eliminating outdated content, and featuring more useful and relevant information.
As you navigate on the new site and attempt to find the information you seek, do let us know what you experience, through webmaster@lightsource.ca. We look forward to your feedback to help us continuously improve our site!

3. 14TH ANNUAL CLS USERS' MEETING - ONLINE REGISTRATION OPENING SOON!
Contact: mailto:clsuo@lightsource.ca
The Canadian Light Source Annual Users' Meeting will be held in Saskatoon June 24-25, 2011. This meeting is a great opportunity to learn about the progress of the Canadian Light Source, present your recent synchrotron work and meet fellow users. Online registration is opening soon, so please check the website over the next week or two. Early registration deadline is May 24th!
This year's meeting will feature a day of workshops on exciting new topics and a day of scientific presentations including a beamline and facility update, latest results from the CLS and young scientists' talks. Other events include a vendor exhibition, poster session and a banquet.
Once online abstract submission is available, you will be invited to submit posters about your recent or planned synchrotron work. Please submit your abstract before Monday, May 16, 2011: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2011/poster_session.php
The Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation will again offer prizes for the best synchrotron-related posters presented by a graduate student(s) or post-doctoral fellow(s). Three prizes of $300 each will be given and will be judged in three research categories: Life Sciences, Environmental and Earth Sciences, and Materials Science and Instrumentation
Funding is available for travel subsidies to students or post-docs presenting a poster.
Visit our website for program and registration information: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2011

4. PHYSICS IN CANADA FEATURES CLS
Contact: mailto:tom.ellis@lightsource.ca
The CLS is featured in the current issue of Physics in Canada, published by the Canadian Association of Physicists: http://www.cap.ca/en/publications/physics-canada-pic/issue/67/1
Five articles highlight the status of the CLS and successful research programs that are of particular interest to the Canadian physics community:
- Status of the Canadian Light Source - New Opportunities for Physics Research in Canada; Thomas Ellis and Emil Hallin
- Advances in Coherent Synchrotron Radiation at the Canadian Light Source; Brant E. Billinghurst and John C. Bergstrom
- La matière condensée sous conditions extrêmes : un programme de recherche au Centre canadien de rayonnement synchrotron; Serge Desgreniers et Chang-Yong Kim
- Nanoscale Magnetism Studied With Soft X-Ray Spectromicroscopy; Adam P. Hitchcock, Karen P. Lam, Samanbir Kalirai and Jian Wang
- Astrophysics and Atmospheric Sciences at the CLS: The Far Infrared Beamline; B.E. Billinghurst, R.M. Lees, A.R.W. McKellar, and A. Predoi-Cross

5. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT: IMAGING AND CONTROL OF SURFACE MAGNETIZATION DOMAINS IN A MAGNETOELECTRIC ANTIFERROMAGNET
Contact: mailto:pdowben@unl.edu
This article reports the direct observation of surface magnetization domains of the magnetoelectric Cr2O3 using photoemission electron microscopy with magnetic circular dichroism contrast and magnetic force microscopy. The domain pattern is strongly affected by the applied electric field conditions. Zero-field cooling results in an equal representation of the two domain types, while electric-field cooling selects one dominant domain type. These observations confirm the existence of surface magnetization, required by symmetry in magnetoelectric antiferromagnets.
The synchrotron research for this paper, which was a PRL Editor's Suggestion, was conducted at the PEEM endstation of the CLS SM beamline 10ID-1 by users from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Department of Physics and Astronomy and Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience, as well as the CLS.

6. CANADIAN SYNCHROTRON SUMMER SCHOOL, JUNE 19 - 23, 2011, SASKATOON
Contact: mailto:summerschool@lightsource.ca
CS3 is now accepting applications! Held in conjunction with SES V and the AUM, this year's theme is Synchrotron Techniques in Environmental Sciences. Information will be presented through lectures, case studies, as well as practical hands-on experience on beamlines collecting and analyzing data.
Please visit http://www.lightsource.ca/education/summerschool/ for more information.

7. CLS GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL SUPPORT PROGRAM
Contact: mailto:travelsupport@lightsource.ca
During the first six months of this program, 18 students received financial support to travel to the CLS to conduct their experiments. The program is continuing, and students can apply at any time. Priority is given to graduate students enrolled at Canadian universities or colleges conducting their first experiment at the CLS, or needing one more visit to complete the work for their thesis. Special cases that demonstrate exceptional need will also be considered.
Please submit the application form found at http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/travel_support.php or, for more information, please contact travelsupport@lightsource.ca

8. PUBLICATIONS MILESTONE REACHED
Contact: mailto:tom.ellis@lightsource.ca
The CLS reached an important milestone in 2010. For the first time, the CLS community produced more than 100 publications in one calendar year. In fact, the current count stands at 129! Thank you all very much for this success.
Did you know that the full list is available on the CLS website http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/publications.php
Please check to make sure that your publications are listed, and remember to submit them to us as quickly as possible. This is also a reminder that 'track record' is one of the three evaluation criteria used for peer review, and this is the list that is used by reviewers to evaluate users who have received beamtime in the past.
