1. CLS WORKSHOP AT CIM 2010: NEW APPROACHES TO GREENER MINING
Contact: mailto:jeffrey.cutler@lightsource.ca
The CLS is organizing a full-day preconference workshop New Approaches to Greener Mining at the Canadian Institute of Minings 2010 Annual General Meeting on Sunday, May 9 in Vancouver.
Increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, worker safety and consumer demand require that the mining industry explore the use of advanced characterization techniques at all stages of the resource extraction cycle. Several advanced methods, including synchrotron spectroscopy and isotope spectrometry, provide a more precise understanding of the chemical and mineralogical composition of ore bodies, mine tailings, aerosols encountered in extraction, and processing. Such information is also invaluable for demonstrating regulatory compliance and developing site remediation strategies. The workshop addresses:
- The regulatory environment and green mining initiatives
- Advanced analytical techniques to characterize mine tailings
- New methods to remediate old mine sites.
Speakers include:
- Louise Laverdure, Natural Resources Canada
- Jeff Warner, CLS
- Lesley Warren, McMaster University
- Heather Jamieson, Queens University
- Skya Fawcett, Lorax Environmental Services
- Bruce Dudley, Delphi Group

2. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT: PHOSPHOROUS SPECIATION IN AGRO-INDUSTRIAL BYPRODUCTS: Sequential Fractionation, Solution P-31 NMR, and P K- and L2,3-Edge XANES Spectroscopy
Contact: mailto:peter.leinweber@uni-rostock.de
Little is known about P species in agro-industrial by-products from developing countries, which may be either pollutants or valuable soil amendments. The present study speciated P in dry (COD) and wet (COW) coffee, sisal (SIS), barley malt (BEB) and sugar cane processing (FIC) by-products, and filter cakes of linseed (LIC) and niger seed (NIC) with sequential fractionation, solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and P K- and L2,3-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The sequential P fractionation recovered 59% to almost 100% of total P (Pt), and more than 50% of Pt was extracted by H2O and NaHCO3 in five out of seven samples. Similarly, the NaOH + EDTA extraction for solution 31P NMR recovered 48-94% of Pt. The 31P NMR spectra revealed orthophosphate (6-81%), pyrophosphate (0-10%), and orthophosphate monoesters (6-94%). Orthophosphate predominated in COD, COW, SIS, and FIC, whereas BEB, LIC, and NIC were rich in orthophosphate monoesters.
The concentrations of Pi and Po determined in the sequential and NaOH + EDTA extractions and 31P NMR spectra were strongly and positively correlated (r = 0.88-1.00). Furthermore, the P K- and L2,3-edge XANES confirmed the H2SO4-Pi detected in the sequential fractionation by unequivocal identification of Ca-P phases in a few samples. The results indicate that the combined use of all four analytical methods is crucial for comprehensive P speciation in environmental samples and the application of these by-products to soil.

3. INDUSTRIAL SCIENCE NEWS: PROPOSED NOVEL MATERIALS CENTRE
Contact: mailto:jeff.cutler@lightsource.ca
The Canadian Light Source is working with the University of Saskatchewan and the Boeing Company on the creation of a new centre focused on the development of novel materials. The Canadian Innovative Material Research Centre (CIMRC) which will be located at the Canadian Light Source will focus on the modeling, fabrication and characterization of new metal alloys. CIMRC is expected to be the nucleus to bring the best and brightest together to focus on industry-driven problems from a cross-section of sectors including aerospace, automotive, medical devices and many others. Over the past couple of months, CIMRC representatives have been meeting with companies in order build a core partnership from the private sector. Things are moving forward and the opportunities are exciting.
As part of the development of CIMRC, the CLS is organizing a symposium at Pacifichem in Honolulu in December of 2010, entitled The Two-Sides of Research and Development (symposium #99, in Area 11 - Chemistry Outreach to the Community). The symposium will bring a multi-disciplinary approach to a discussion on technology transfer. Whereas in the past, research and development often existed in a single organization, such as the central research laboratories of corporations, today such companies often rely on innovations in academic laboratories to drive their product development. As a result, cooperation among organizations with very different perspectives is required to succeed in the marketplace. How this cooperation succeeds or fails will be the focus of this symposium. See the link to the conference http://www.pacifichem.org/ - the deadline for abstracts is April 5.
I hope to see you in Hawaii,
Jeff Cutler
CLS Director of Industrial Science

6. PHASE II BEAMLINES UPDATE: ACCELERATING INTO FULL OPERATIONS
Contact: mailto:robert.blyth@lightsource.ca
The last week of beam before the spring shutdown saw two milestones achieved on Phase II. On March 16th, full power monochromatic X-rays were brought into the last BMIT hutch for the first time. Together with the installation of the large animal position system and the microbeam radiation therapy lift, this marks the completion of the BMIT facility. In the same week the CMCF bending magnet beamline hosted its first users: Vivian Saridakis and Logan Donaldson from York University.
Phase II is now accelerating into full operations please contact the appropriate beamline scientists to see how their beamline can help your science: http://www.lightsource.ca/experimental/
