6. Scientists See Norwalk Virus’ Achilles Heel
Contact: mailto:matt.dalzell@lightsource.ca
Using the CLS, an international team led by University of Calgary researcher Ken Ng has determined the detailed structure of the enzyme the Norwalk virus uses to make copies of its genetic code in order to replicate itself. The information is crucial to developing drugs that could be used to treat outbreaks of Norwalk and other related viruses.

7. MIRARCO, CLS Agreement Lights Way to Greener Mining
Contact: mailto:matt.dalzell@lightsource.ca
Shining synchrotron light on environmental questions facing the mining industry is the goal of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently signed at the GLOBE 2008 conference, in Vancouver, between the Canadian Light Source (CLS) and MIRARCO Mining Innovation.
The agreement between the CLS and MIRARCO’s Centre for Environmental Monitoring aims to develop collaborative research projects with partners from the minerals industry, using synchrotron-based X-ray analytical techniques to identify the chemical forms of potentially toxic elements encountered by industry in resource extraction, processing and waste management. Knowledge gained from such research can be used by industry to validate safety standards, satisfy regulatory requirements, and develop remediation strategies.
