4. CLS Summer School – Monday June 26- Last chance to apply!

Contact: tracy.walker@lightsource.ca

CLS’s first summer school aims to provide graduate, post-doctoral and senior undergraduate students with synchrotron-specific knowledge and skills applicable to their research. In this first year, the program will cover topics such as the production and properties of synchrotron radiation, an overview of current and future CLS beamlines, and lectures on synchrotron applications to a number of scientific disciplines (protein crystallography, infra-red, photoemission spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy). Students will also obtain hands-on experience in data collection and data analysis.

Details, including registration information, are available at: http://www.lightsource.ca/education/summerschool

5. Summer Workshop for Teachers – Hands-on Experiments!

Contact: tracy.walker@lightsource.ca

This year, for the first time, participating teachers will be able to conduct actual experiments on a CLS research station!

The second CLS teacher’s workshop will be held August 9-11, 2006. This is an opportunity for science teachers to learn about synchrotron light and the Canadian Light Source. Teachers will also be given lesson plans on synchrotron light which are tailored for specific education levels of students.

The workshop and lesson plans are very basic overviews of the synchrotron, techniques and experiments. With these tools, teachers can bring their own new knowledge to the classroom and use the lesson plans as guides to teach their students what synchrotron light is and how it relates to their lives.
