2. Officials visit Ottawa to promote CLS as part of government's Innovation Agenda

(Contact: sandra.ribeiro@lightsource.ca)

CLS Executive Director Bill Thomlinson and U of S President Peter MacKinnon, along with a few staff, descended on Ottawa from April 28 to May 2, holding a blitz of meetings with dozens of political, government, diplomatic, and national research agency leaders.

The trip's purpose was to raise the profile of both the U of S and the CLS among senior decision-makers and policy advisors. The Ottawa visit included meetings with five federal government ministers or secretaries of state, nine deputy ministers, four granting council presidents, and senior diplomats from 25 countries.

The U of S and CLS group also hosted receptions for political leaders and U of S alumni. Some of the people MacKinnon and Thomlinson met included Industry Minister Allan Rock, Opposition Leader Stephen Harper, House of Commons Speaker Peter Milliken, national New Democratic Party Leader Jack Layton, Human Resources Minister Jane Stewart, and the heads of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, National Research Council (NRC), National Sciences and Research Engineering Council (NSERC), and Genome Canada.

An article in the May 6 edition of Research $ magazine stated in part: "A source close to the discussions says the message delivered by the CLS delegation in a series of meetings, lunches, dinners and receptions was well received by government officials."

The U of S delegation included MacKinnon, Thomlinson and Cindy Paquette, U of S Director of Governments Relations. For certain other functions the group also included Gordon Thiessen, U of S Board of Governors Chair, Rob Slinger, CLS Business Development Officer, Sandra Ribeiro, CLS Public Relations & Marketing and Rob Norris, U of S International Co-ordinator of Communications and Program Development.

4. Storage Ring update

(Contact: dan.lowe@lightsource.ca)

The vacuum system has been installed in 11 of 12 cells. Dipole magnets and orbit correctors are also installed in 11 of 12 cells. All other magnets are now mounted and realigned in all 12 storage ring cells. Of the 12 cells, the magnets on five are now connected to the DC power supplies. The main water system is being flushed to clean up after assembly, and water-cooling should start to be connected to the magnets in a week's time.

Kicker magnets have arrived and will be set-up shortly. The Super-conducting Radio Frequency Cavity has also been installed, its related mechanical and electrical connections are progressing, and testing will be completed in early July.

Installation of all storage ring components is expected to be complete by mid-July.
