1. Election Results – Users’ Advisory Committee
Contact: clsuo@lightsource.ca
The Canadian Light Source Users' Advisory Committee (UAC) has 12 members
with staggered terms, and there were three positions to fill for the term
starting November, 2006. It is my pleasure to inform you about the recently
held UAC election results.
The following people were elected for a 3 year term starting in November
1, 2006:
- Grant Henderson, Dept. of Geology, University of Toronto
- Ramaswami Sammynaiken, SSSC, Biochemistry/Chemistry, University of Saskatchewan
- Regan Wilks, Dept. of Physics and Engineering Physics, University of
Saskatchewan (student representative - 2 year term)
Congratulations! On behalf of the UAC, I would like to thank all candidates
for volunteering in this election. We are looking forward to working with
the new members of our committee. We would also like to thank the retiring
members - Dean Chapman, Stefan Kycia and Michele Loewen (past chair) - for
their valuable contributions to the committee.
Sincerely,
Alexander Moewes, UAC chair

2. NSERC to conduct mid-term review- October 5-6, 2006
Contact: tom.ellis@lightsource.ca
NSERC will be conducting the Mid-Term review site visits at the CLS on October
5-6. The evaluation will focus on the following selection criteria for the
Major Resources Support (MRS) program (previously the MFA grant):
- Uniqueness of the resource
- Use of the resource by the research community
- Need for access by researchers to the resource
- Merit of the research programs that rely on access to the resource, and
the caliber of the researchers using the facility
- Demonstrated need for support
- Management of the resource
- Contribution of the facility to the training of highly qualified personnel
- Synergy
This review has always been planned as part of our grant cycle and is not
a request for new funding. There will be active participation from a broad
range of groups and individuals, such as users, beamteams, staff, committee
members and administrators. As we prepare for this important process we thank
you for your cooperation in responding to requests for information and welcome
any comments you may have. Information regarding recently filled synchrotron-related
positions in institutions across Canada would be particularly valuable.
Tom Ellis,
Director of Research

5. First Announcement - Medical Applications of Synchrotron Radiation
(MASR 2007), Saskatoon, August 26-30, 2007
Contact: cls@lightsource.ca
Mark your calendars: from August 26 to 30, 2007, the CLS will host the Medical
Applications of Synchrotron Radiation (MASR2007) conference. MASR is
the premier event of the international synchrotron medical imaging community. We
expect this meeting to attract nearly 200 medical research experts from around
the world.
MASR2007 will be a great opportunity to showcase what will be the most exciting
synchrotron medical infrastructure in the world, the BioMedical Imaging and
Therapy (BMIT) beamline at the CLS.

6. Summer Workshop for Teachers – Hands-on Experiments!
Contact: tracy.walker@lightsource.ca
This year, for the first time, participating teachers will be able to conduct
actual experiments on a CLS research station!
The second CLS teacher’s workshop will be held August 9-11, 2006.
This is an opportunity for science teachers to learn about synchrotron light
and the Canadian Light Source. Teachers will also be given lesson plans on
synchrotron light which are tailored for specific education levels of students.
The workshop and lesson plans are very basic overviews of the synchrotron,
techniques and experiments. With these tools, teachers can bring their
own new knowledge to the classroom and use the lesson plans as guides to
teach their students what synchrotron light is and how it relates to their
lives.
