1. CALL FOR PROPOSALS OPENS WEDNESDAY JANUARY 28, 2009

Contact: clsuo@lightsource.ca

Cycle 10 Call for Proposals will open on Wednesday January 28, for scheduling of beam time for the July-December, 2009 period. View schedule at http://www.lightsource.ca/operations/schedule.php

PLEASE NOTE: The deadline for applying is February 25, 2009.

GENERAL USER PROPOSALS received for operational beamlines are reviewed for safety and technical feasibility, then scored for scientific merit by an external review committee. Research time obtained through this process (competitive peer review) takes place twice per year. General User research should result in the publishing of scientific results.

You have the option of submitting a NEW proposal or submitting a Beam Time Request against an Active Proposal. Allocation of shifts for July-December, 2009 will be based on the highest ranked proposals (both new and active). To view evaluation criteria used in reviewing and rating proposals see http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/proposal_writing_tips.php or to compare your score to others on the same beamline, please visit http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/results_of_call.php.

Beamlines participating in the Call include:

In addition to normal mode operations at 250  mA, three shifts are available for Single Bunch Mode and one for Coherent Synchrotron Radiation studies. These shifts must be applied for through the General User program.

For more information, please visit our website: http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/call_proposals.php .

LETTERS OF INTENT

Letters of Intent provide the opportunity to perform some exploratory experiments as the beamline is being commissioned. Research must be discussed with the appropriate CLSI beamline scientist prior to submitting an application.

Beamlines accepting Letters of Intent (http://www.lightsource.ca/experimental/intent_letter.php) include:

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office at clsuo@lightsource.ca or 306-657-3700.

2. FIRST IMAGES FROM MEDICAL BEAMLINE

A University of Saskatchewan (U of S)-led research team at the CLS received an early Christmas present. After several years of research, construction, and testing, the unique-in-North-America BioMedical Imaging and Therapy facility (BMIT) captured its first X-ray images.

“Our entire team was just thrilled with what we saw – the images we’re getting on BMIT are as good as any I’ve gotten at any other synchrotron. That’s quite an achievement given that we had our first X-rays down the beamline less than a month ago,” said Dean Chapman, U of S Canada Research Chair in X-ray Imaging and BMIT team leader.

3. NEXT GENERATION X-RAY SOURCES WORKSHOP- MONTREAL, MAY 1, 2009

Contact: mark@physics.mcgill.ca

Around the world, next generation X-ray sources are either under construction or being proposed. The Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation (CISR) is hosting a workshop to inform the Canadian community about the status and the exciting new science that is being proposed to take advantage of these new sources.

This workshop will highlight the Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) proposed by Cornell University, the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) under construction at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and the Advanced Laser Light Source (ALLS) recently completed at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique. Talks will include both the technology of the sources and the proposed new science they allow.

The workshop will be held Friday, May 1, 2009 in the Rutherford Physics Building, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec.

For further information please the web site http://www.physics.mcgill.ca/ngxs/ or contact Mark Sutton at mark@physics.mcgill.ca or phone: 514-398-6523.

4. JOINT ASSEMBLY 2009 - TORONTO, MAY 24 - 27, 2009

SPECIATION OF AEROSOLS USING ADVANCED RESEARCH TECHNIQUES
Contact: lisa.vanloon@lightsource.ca

The purpose of this session is to highlight recent advances, research gaps, and atmospheric, environmental, and occupational health issues in understanding composition and speciation of aerosols using advanced research techniques. The chemical speciation of aerosols plays an important role in determining their impact on the environment and on health. Also of interest is the distribution of chemical speciation within aerosol systems, the relationship between speciation and size fraction, and between speciation and particle microstructure. Systems of interest include but are not limited to minerals, soot, biological particles and sea salt.

The session will focus on aerosols that are naturally occurring, from anthropogenic sources, and of occupational relevance. Advanced techniques include, among others, synchrotron radiation, X-ray analysis, microscopic and spectroscopic methods, and aerosol mass spectrometry. Possible topics for discussion include metal speciation in aerosols, chemical transformation of aerosols in the environment, and the importance of chemical speciation in occupational health and safety. Research papers describing novel techniques are also invited.

Abstract submission deadline is March 4, 2009.
More information is available at http://www.agu.org/meetings/ja09/index.php.
