1. Canadian Chemistry Conference in Saskatoon- May 28- June 1, 2005
Contact: jeff.cutler@lightsource.ca
In conjunction with the centennial of Saskatchewan province's centennial, the 88th annual Canadian Chemistry Conference is being held in Saskatoon from May 28-June 1. This meeting will showcase the broad array of disciplines within the field of chemistry. This year's theme of "Illuminating Chemistry" is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the completion of the Canadian Light Source, our synchrotron.
Of particular interest to the scientific community are two symposia being organized and sponsored by the Canadian Light Source:
The first is a one-day environmental symposium entitled “Application of Synchrotron Science to Environmental Chemistry” organized by Jeffrey Warner (CLSI) and Jeffrey Cutler (CLSI). Four exciting speakers have been invited to participate: Derek Peak – University of Saskatchewan; Hoi-Ying Holman – Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory; Alain Manceau - Université J. Fourier; Ben Gilbert – Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory. Submit your abstracts today at http://www.csc2005.ca
The second is a two-day symposium in honour of one of the builders of the Canadian synchrotron community, G. Michael Bancroft, FCIC, and is entitled “The Birth of a Dream: A Synchrotron Light Source in Canada”. This symposium is being organized by Jeffrey Cutler (CLSI) and T.K. Sham (UWO). A number of speakers from around the world have been invited to present their work and reflect on Mike Bancroft’s career and their interactions. Submit your abstracts today at http://www.csc2005.ca
CLS Hands-On Workshop
In conjunction with the Canadian Society of Chemistry meeting in Saskatoon, the CLS is planning on conducting a short course on x-ray spectroscopy of soft materials. This will be an educational and informational workshop concerning x-ray spectroscopy of low density (low Z element) materials. The workshop shall include an educational section where various types of x-ray spectroscopies are introduced and then demonstrated on 2 of the CLS soft x-ray beamlines. Participants will be invited to bring some of their own samples for this demonstration. The workshop shall then continue with selected invited speakers who shall present examples of world class soft materials x-ray spectroscopy work. The workshop shall conclude with an open round table discussion and exchange of ideas on the topic of soft material x-ray spectroscopy.

2. Election Results: New Users' Advisory Committee members
Contact: clsuo@lightsource.ca
On behalf of the Users’ Advisory Committee I would like to congratulate Suzanne Beauchemin, Rene Coulombe, Janay MacNaughton and Robert McKellar for their successful election to the 2005 committee. We look forward to working with you all in the coming years.
Results for the November versus June AUM vote are now available:
82 votes were cast in favor of June; 56 votes in favor of November and 70 votes were cast for either month being suitable. 60% of eligible voters participated. Based on these results, the 2006 AUM will be held in June with the specific date to be announced later. However, because of the time necessary to organize the Annual User's Meeting, it has been deemed unfeasible to hold it this coming June of 2005. As such the AUM date for 2005 will remain, for one final year, the third weekend of November, November 19th, 2005.
Please watch for more information about the 2005 AUM in upcoming CLS E-news or visit our website at http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/

Contact: tracy.walker@lightsource.ca
More than 7700 people toured the CLS in 2004, mostly through the Educational Outreach office. CLS Outreach employs several University of Saskatchewan students, majoring in different areas of science, to tour groups. Here are some examples of the kinds of groups that visited our facility last year:
- 2,600 members of the public;
- 2,800 school and university students;
- 850 business and/or government people;
- More than 1000 scientists.

4. CLS Donates toques to Saskatoon school children
Contact: sandra.ribeiro@lightsource.ca
During the holiday season, CLS and One Source Marketing teamed up to donate CLS fleece toques to less fortunate children in the city. Over 700 toques were distributed to nearly 17 inner city/community schools across Saskatoon through the Care and Share Saskatoon Inc. program. Hundreds of children have benefited by having a nice warm toque, especially during the recent significant drop in temperature. Many schools have responded with thank you cards and artwork, some of which are on display at reception. CLS and One Source Marketing are proud to be active members in our community, and were pleased to help some of Saskatoon's disadvantaged children.
