4. NEXT GENERATION X-RAY SOURCES WORKSHOP- MONTREAL, MAY 1, 2009
Contact: mailto:mark@physics.mcgill.ca
Around the world, several next generation X-ray sources are either under construction or being proposed. The Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation (CISR) is hosting a workshop to inform the Canadian community about the status and the exciting new science being proposed to take advantage of these new sources. One goal of the workshop is finding out about the community in Canada interested in such projects.
This workshop will highlight the energy recovery linacs (ERL), x-ray free electron lasers (XFEL), and laser induced x-ray sources. Topics will feature the science behind the new sources, source properties and the proposed new science they allow.
The workshop will be held Friday, May 1, 2009 in the Rutherford Physics Building, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec.
For further information, please visit http://www.physics.mcgill.ca/ngxs/ or contact Mark Sutton at mark@physics.mcgill.ca or phone: 514-398-6523.

6. SCIENCE HIGHLIGHT: VORTEX CORE SWITCHING BY COHERENT EXCITATION WITH SINGLE IN-PLANE MAGNETIC FIELD PULSES
Contact: mailto:Bartel.VanWaeyenberge@UGent.be
The response of magnetic vortex cores to subnanosecond in-plane magnetic field pulses was studied by time-resolved X-ray microscopy. Vortex core reversal was observed and the switching events were located in space and time. This revealed a mechanism of coherent excitation by the leading and trailing edges of the pulse, lowering the field amplitude required for switching. The mechanism was confirmed by micromagnetic simulations and can be understood in terms of gyration around the vortex equilibrium positions, displaced by the applied field.
