1. CALL FOR PROPOSALS – DEADLINE March 26
Contact: mailto:clsuo@lightsource.ca
The Canadian Light Source Call for Proposals is open for scheduling of beamtime for the July-December, 2008 period.
GENERAL USER PROPOSALS received for Operational beamlines will be reviewed for safety and technical feasibility and scored for scientific merit by an external review committee. Research time obtained through this process (competitive peer review) takes place twice per year. General User research should result in the publishing of scientific results.
You have the option of submitting a NEW proposal or submitting a Beam Time Request against an Active Proposal. Allocation of shifts for July-December, 2008 will be based on the highest ranked proposals (both new and active). To view evaluation criteria used in reviewing and rating proposals see http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/proposal_writing_tips.php or to compare your score to others on the same beamline, please visit http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/results_of_call.php.

2. MEDSI/SRI 2008 – Call for Abstracts and Registration Open!
http://www.lightsource.ca/medsi-sri2008
A unique event will take place in Saskatoon this summer. For the first time ever, MEDSI AND SRI 2008 will be held at the same time, alongside the 11th Canadian Light Source Annual Users’ Meeting.
The Fifth International Workshop on Mechanical Engineering Design of Synchrotron Radiation Equipment and Instrumentation (MEDSI) and the Fifteenth Pan-American Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI) Conference will be held in Saskatoon on June 10-13, 2008. This joint meeting will bring engineers and scientists together and will be a great opportunity to hear about advances made in synchrotron research and development around the world, and to present your own results to an international audience.
In addition to MEDSI and SRI program sessions, associated joint workshops include:
- Engineering for Low Emittance
- Cryogenic Systems for Light Sources
- Future Directions for Synchrotron Radiation Photoemission
- Correlated Microscopy, at the Synchrotron and Beyond
- Remote Beamline Access
- Challenges in Beamline Optics
- Safety Critical Synchrotron Software
For further information, please contact Marie Knowles, Conference Coordinator, at mailto:marie.knowles@lightsource.ca or 306-657-3540.

3. Phase II Beamlines Progress
Contact: mailto:emil.hallin@lightsource.ca
On February 15, 2008, VESPERS demonstrated a significant milestone by simultaneously measuring X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence with a target consisting of a yttrium aluminum garnet crystal on a copper block. The team has achieved an impressive series of milestones in the past 8 months:
- Vacuum envelope completed in July 2007 (Toyama)
- Monochromator completed November 2007 (CLSI)
- Control system substantial completion in February 2008 (CLSI)
- First scientific data taken on February 15, 2008 (VESPERS team)
Reaching this milestone involved the coordinated and dedicated work of a large group of individuals from each of the organizations mentioned above.
While substantial completion and occupancy of the building addition (which will house BMIT) has been achieved, progress in other Phase II facilities includes:
- SXRMB has demonstrated first post monochromator light. Scientific data can be expected from this facility shortly.
- SyLMAND has exposed and developed its first structure, albeit using white light only.
- The BMIT bending magnet monochromator produced its first image while being tested on the SyLMAND beamline. The wiggler for BMIT is exceeding all main performance specifications. Other facilities are ordering their own versions of this innovating and world leading insertion device.
- CMCF2 optical components have been shipped. The monochromator was damaged in trans-shipment in Calgary and has been returned to Kohzu for repairs.
- The REIXS EPU has been installed and tested in the storage ring lattice.

4. CLS Earth & Environmental Science Theme Workshop- May 5-6, 2008
Contact: mailto:derek.peak@usask.ca
This is the second in a series of three workshops to be held in the “pillar areas” of the CLS (the other two being Life Science, and Materials and Molecular Science). The goals of this workshop are to provide the CLS with feedback on how synchrotron science will fit into the larger framework of Canadian environmental and earth science research; to identify potential areas of competitive advantage and needed infrastructure for existing CLS beamlines; to provide feedback for how the CLS can best support earth and environmental science research; and to provide a framework (via a report) for a multi-year plan for earth and environmental science research at the CLS.
We will focus on two major aspects of environmental synchrotron research. The first is a more general discussion on how synchrotron research fits into the overall research directions for Canadian environmental science. The second focus will be on innovative environmental science applications from experts on soft and hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy, microprobe techniques, infrared and X-ray spectromicroscopy, as well as other emerging techniques.
This workshop is an opportunity for members of the CLS earth and environmental science community and invited experts from around the world to discuss the future direction of our national synchrotron facility in the molecular environmental sciences. I encourage you to attend and make your voices heard.
