1. CALL FOR PROPOSALS OPENS MONDAY MARCH 5, 2007
Contact: clsuo@lightsource.ca

The Canadian Light Source Call for Proposals will open on Monday, March 5, for scheduling of beamtime for the July – December, 2007 period.

GENERAL USER PROPOSALS received for Operational beamlines will be reviewed for safety and technical feasibility and scored for scientific merit by an external review committee. Research time obtained through this process (competitive peer review) takes place twice per year. General User research should result in the publishing of scientific results.

You have the option of submitting a NEW proposal or submitting a Beam Time Request against an Active Proposal. Allocation of shifts for July- December, 2007 will be based on the highest ranked proposals (both new and active). Active proposals will not be re-evaluated but maintain their initial score. These are the scores that are taken into the scheduling process. To view evaluation criteria used in reviewing and rating proposals see http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/proposal_writing_tips.php or to compare your score to others on the same beamline, please visit http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/results_of_call.php.

Beamlines participating in the Call include:

For more information please visit our website: http://www.lightsource.ca/uso/call_proposals.php.

At this time we would also like to announce three beamlines accepting Letters of Intent. LETTERS OF INTENT http://www.lightsource.ca/experimental/intent_letter.php provide the opportunity to perform exploratory experiments as the beamline is being commissioned.

Please note: At this year’s Annual Users’ Meeting in June, the Users’ Office plans to present the evaluation criteria used for scoring proposals and determine user community opinion regarding the potential introduction of score adjustments. Score adjustments would allow for a wider distribution of users on beamlines which are oversubscribed. If implemented, the score of all proposals which received time in the previous cycle and then reapplied for the upcoming cycle would have their score modified by -0.1 prior to the allocation for the period January-June, 2008.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office at clsuo@lightsource.ca or 306-657-3700.

The Canadian Light Source Annual Users' Meeting and Associated Workshops will be held at the University of Saskatchewan June 16 to June 17, 2007. The meeting is a great opportunity to learn about the progress of the Canadian Light Source, present your recent synchrotron work and meet fellow users!

This year’s meeting will be held in conjunction with the 62nd Annual Congress of the Canadian Association of Physicists June 17-20, 2007—joint sessions will be held on June 17.

AUM Program: Saturday, June 16

  • Facility Overview
  • Keynote Scientific Speakers
  • Latest Results from the CLS
  • Young Scientist Talks

Associated Workshops: Sunday, June 17
Five workshops covering a wide range of topics will be held in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Physicists.

  • Recent Advances in Condensed Matter Physics with Synchrotron Radiation
  • Recent Progress in Studying Biomaterials with Synchrotron Radiation
  • Illuminating to New Depths: Our Understanding of Surface Phenomena
  • Industrial Applications of Synchrotron Radiation
  • Soft X-ray Spectromicroscopy and its Applications

Poster Session and CISR Student Prize
You are invited to submit posters about your recent or planned synchrotron work. The Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation will again offer a prize for the best synchrotron related poster presented by a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow.

Herzberg Lecture
All are welcome to attend the Herzberg Public Lecture the evening of Sunday, June 17 featuring Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman. Dr. Wieman and colleagues created the first pure Bose-Einstein condensate. This event is co-sponsored with the Canadian Association of Physicists.

5. Notes from the UAC
Contact: ernst.bergmann@ualberta.ca

The UAC has been busy with the preparation of the 2007 AGM, which promises to be a very interesting showcase of synchrotron science. (Details are elsewhere in this newsletter.) The UAC is also working on several issues of concern to the user community. We have been involved with the committee that analyzed the working conditions in the experimental hall. A report and a response from the CLS have been completed. Progress is being made on improvement of the work environment. The UAC will continue to work with the CLS on these efforts.

Another issue of importance for users is the priority for the future machine capabilities of the CLS. Discussions on this issue are continuing. Amongst the options for future development are increased brightness, top-up mode and 500mA operations.

The UAC is also concerned about the availability of sufficient resources for beamline development, especially engineering and control systems. With the development of phase I beamlines still ongoing, phase II beamlines in various stages of development and procurement and now phase III beamlines funded, the UAC is encouraging the CLS to address possible shortfalls.

In the last year the UAC has worked on increasing communication with other committees of the CLS especially the Science Advisory Committee (SAC). UAC members now attend SAC meeting as observers and we feel that this is a positive development.

Finally, we encourage all users to bring any concerns to our attention, after all the CLS is primarily a national user facility. The contact information for current UAC members is available on the CLS website: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/membership.php

The CLS is pleased to welcome Gordon Barkway to the Engineering and Technical Services Group. An alumnus of the University of Saskatchewan's College of Engineering, Gordon's career as a Mechanical Engineer started with TransAlta Utilities Corporation in Alberta. Gordon returned to Saskatoon in 1999, at which time he joined Hitachi Canadian Industries in an engineering management role.

The CLS is also pleased to welcome Joanne Wurmlinger, Assistant Director, Development (Research) from University Advancement at the University of Saskatchewan (UofS). Joanne will provide leadership, direction and expertise in developing and implementing fundraising plans to support priority research areas at the UofS, specifically focusing on large projects such as the CLS.

Summer student recruitment activities are well underway. Candidate short-listing and interviews will be taking place at the CLS at the beginning of March.
