1. CALL FOR PROPOSALS OPEN - March 1 to April 3, 2006!
Contact: clsuo@lightsource.ca

We are now accepting Proposals and Letters of Intent for several commissioning and operational beamlines.

GENERAL USER PROPOSALS will be accepted for Operational beamlines. Research time obtained through this process (competitive peer review) takes place twice per year. General User research should result in the publishing of scientific results.

This call for proposals is for the period between July 1 and December 31, 2006. Proposals will be accepted between March 1 and April 3, 2006 for the following beamlines:

LETTERS OF INTENT will be accepted for beamlines undergoing commissioning, and provide the opportunity to perform exploratory experiments as the beamline is being commissioned. Letters of Intent will be accepted throughout the entire commissioning phase on the following beamlines:

2. Experimental Facilities Update
Contact: tom.ellis@lightsource.ca

Last year's "Year of Firsts” continued into January and February. The CMCF protein crystallography beamline and the XAFS portion of the HXMA beamline are both now passing synchrotron light through all optical components and they are fine-tuning the “shaping” of their beams. The Mid-IR beamline now has synchrotron light through the microscope. The VLS-PGM beamline is ready to accommodate user experiments on a more regular basis, after having demonstrated that the resolving power meets the design performance (>=10,000) over the entire photon energy range, while the flux is approaching the design intensity.

On other news, Kirk Michaelian (NRCan) has taken over as Mid-IR Beamteam Leader. I would like to thank departing Beamteam Leader Mike Jackson (NRC-IBD) for his important contributions to the building of this beamline.

Stay tuned for news about the first science publications coming out of the CLS (2 manuscripts from users have recently been accepted!).

As my first year as Director of Research draws to an end, I predict that the current year will be notable for starting new chapters, as we bring the commissioning process to an end on most of our Phase I beamlines and we begin installing components for the Phase II beamlines.

3. 9th Annual Users’ Meeting June 16-18, 2006
Contact: michele.loewen@nrc.ca

The Canadian Light Source Annual Users' Meeting (AUM) will be held at the University of Saskatchewan June 16-18, 2006. The meeting is a great opportunity to learn about the progress of the Canadian Light Source, present your recent synchrotron work and meet fellow users. This years’ meeting will be held in conjunction with the 3rd Northern Lights Summer Conference of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies June 14-16, 2006—joint sessions will be held on June 16. The theme of the Northern Lights conference is “Shining Light on Biological Processes”.

This years’ meeting will feature five workshops on Friday, June 16, 2006 held in conjunction with the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies:

  • Molecular Form & Function: Probing Intact Tissues using Synchrotron Light
  • Synchrotron Protein Crystallography
  • New Instrumentation for Soft X-ray Photon-In-Photon-Out Spectroscopy
  • Synchrotron and Advanced Analytical Techniques in the Forensic Sciences
  • Terahertz (THz) Workshop

For more information about these workshops visit us at: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2006/workshops.php

The main AUM will be held Saturday, June 17, 2006. We have an exciting line-up of speakers covering a wide range of hot scientific topics! International speakers include: John Bargar (Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory), Giacomo Ghiringhelli (Politecnico di Milano) and Ralf-Hendrik Menk (Sincrotrone Trieste).

From Canada’s thriving synchrotron community speakers include Andrea Damascelli (University of British Columbia) and  Paul Scott (University of Alberta).

And HIGHLIGHTING RESULTS BASED ON CLS activity will be Helen Nichol (University of Saskatchewan), Allen Pratt (Natural Resources Canada), Jeanne Percival (Natural Resources Canada, Geological Survey of Canada), T.K. Sham (University of Western Ontario) and Regan Wilks (University of Saskatchewan).

We are also pleased to welcome Isabelle Blain, NSERC Vice-President, Research Grants and Scholarships.

This year’s meeting will also feature tours of the CLS, a wine and cheese poster session, our annual CLS users’ banquet and associated beam team meetings. Online registration opens March 1st so be sure to register before the Early Registration deadline on May 1, 2006!

For more information, including online registration (coming soon!) visit our webpage: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2006

5. Storage Ring Update
Contact: les.dallin@lightsource.ca

As of Run 22 (February 2006) the storage ring began operating at 200 mA stored current.  This typically decays to 120 mA over an eight hour shift.  During the same run the XSR (X-ray Synchrotron Radiation) diagnostic beamline was commissioned.  With the improved beam imaging from the XSR the beam position is seen to be very stable.  As well, the vertical coupling is better than previously reported and at best is as low as 0.2%.  A new operating point (tune) was investigated and promises to produce a beam that is 60% brighter.

More information regarding Storage Ring Status is available here: http://www.lightsource.ca/machine/schedule.php#status

7. Lightsources.org celebrates its first year online!
Contact: webmaster@lightsources.org

lightsources.org, the only web site to comprehensively feature news, information and educational materials about the world's synchrotron radiation and free electron laser (light source) facilities, will celebrate the anniversary of its launch on February 17, 2006. Sponsored by 21 of the world’s major light sources, this site serves as a clearing house for information on all the world's light sources, including synchrotron radiation and free electron laser facilities.

Through the past year, lightsources.org has grown significantly in content and traffic. More than 150 press releases and over 600 synchrotron-related press items have been listed on the web site and distributed to subscribers--via email and RSS. Web traffic is continually increasing and is now averaging over 100,000 page views/month.

8. First CLS Summer School- August 1-4, 2006
Contact: Tracy.walker@lightsource.ca

CLS’s first summer school will take place between August 1 and 4, 2006. The school aims to provide upper-year undergraduate and graduate university students with synchrotron-specific knowledge and skills applicable to their research.

In this first year, the program will focus on synchrotron experimental techniques in IR, soft x-rays and hard x-rays. Students will also obtain hands-on experience in data collection and data analysis.
