1. Prioritization of Phase II Beamlines

(Contact: emil.hallin@cls.usask.ca)

To aid in the progression of Phase II photon beamlines the CLSI board created an ad-hoc "Prioritization Committee" with a mandate to determine a prioritization mechanism and to prioritize the suite of beamlines being considered for the next build-out phase. At its last meeting (November 22, 2002) the committee prepared its report, which is summarized here. These recommendations were accepted by the CLSI Board of Directors on Dec. 5, 2002 for distribution to the CLS Community.

The ad-hoc Prioritization Committee has considered the following eight beamlines in their latest deliberations: 1) Hard x-ray diffraction (combination of powder and small molecule diffraction lines), 2) Hard x-ray microprobe, 3) biomedical line, 4) DCM, 5) XES, 6) PX II, 7) VESPERS, and 8) MEMS. The prioritization was based on the following six equally weighted criteria: scientific merit, leadership, community size, cost, technical feasibility, and economic impact.

The committee concludes that:

  1. All these beamline proposals are excellent and should go forward with LOIs to the CFI.
  2. All these beamline proposals have a quantitative rank, which is roughly equivalent within the statistics.
  3. There is nonetheless a relatively clear qualitative difference between these eight beamlines. The ordinal ranking (based on the number of first, second, etc., place finishes) reveals two clear groups: a) The PX II, XES, and DCM lines have been given the highest rank. b) The VESPERS, MEMS, Biomedical line, Hard x-ray diffraction line, and the Hard x-ray microprobe are next. Of these, four lines have some issue yet to be completely resolved. The Facility Advisory Committee must act on VESPERS and MEMS, and the Biomedical project still has unanswered leadership concerns. The needs of the Hard x-ray microprobe community may possibly be met by the Phase I micro-XAFS line. A decision on this awaits technical input from the users.

2. UAC Election -- Polls Open December 9

(Contact: stephen.urquhart@lightsource.ca)

The Users' Advisory Committee (UAC) is calling an election to fill the vacancies on this committee. This committee has 12 members with staggered terms, and there are four positions to fill this year. A list of nominees was created at the Annual Users' Meeting, and the election will occur through electronic voting on the CLS web site. The polls will be open from December 9, 2002 until 12 noon CST (GMT-6) on December 22, 2002. If you intend to use the CLS, then the UAC is YOUR committee. Exercise your right to participate, be sure to vote! http://www.lightsource.ca/voting/

3. Executive Director Bill Thomlinson- Users' Meeting presentation- "A Time of Transition"

(Contact: cls@lightsource.ca)

A couple of weeks into his new job, Dr. Thomlinson shared with Users, at the Nov. 16 Annual meeting, his past experience and his "CLS agenda" (which includes addressing User priorities such as Communications and Access issues.)

You can see the whole PPT presentation at http://www.lightsource.ca/greetings_to_CLSI_users.ppt

4. Project Leader Mark de Jong- Users' Meeting presentation- "CLS Project Status"

(Contact: mark.deJong@lightsource.ca)

The presentation Mark de Jong delivered at our last Users' Meeting (Nov. 16) highlights the progress achieved on the Injector, Storage Ring, IT infrastructure and Beamlines to date.

You can see the complete PPT presentation at: http://www.lightsource.ca/project_status.ppt

5. Storage Ring progress

(Contact: dan.lowe@lightsource.ca)

The cryogenic plant has been successfully commissioned. All liquid nitrogen main distribution lines have been installed. The first shipment of Quadrupoles and Sextupoles has arrived (50% have already been shipped) and installation of these magnets has begun.

75% of the vacuum system and all vacuum commercial components have arrived. Assembly of the first vacuum cell has also begun.

All pedestals have been installed and will be aligned before the end of the year and all girders have been delivered.

Installation of one cell has been initiated. One test cell was previously assembled to ensure proper integration of all services (mechanical; electrical; controls). Work has started on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. Lastly, the RF amplifier system is currently being set-up and the RF cavity will be delivered in January.

6. Latest Booster Ring tests

(Contact: les.dallin@lightsource.ca)

In the last week in November more tests were conducted on the Booster Ring. It was operated successfully under different injection conditions, including lower energy (210MeV) and larger energy spread (1%).

At the same time, the global orbit correction software to be used in the storage ring was successfully tested in the booster. The next set of tests will occur in conjunction with the testing of the storage ring.

7. Notes from the UAC - Report on 5th Annual Users' Meeting

(Contact: stephen.urquhart@usask.ca)

The 5th Annual Users' Meeting held at the University of Saskatchewan on Saturday, November 16, 2002 was a tremendous success. The attendance set a new record, with over 300 attendees at the meeting and associated workshops. A full report on the meeting, with summaries of presentations as well as the scientific presentations at the workshops held on November 15, 2002, is available online at http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/cls-um5-rep.pdf

The members of the UAC would like to express thanks to Sandra Ribeiro and to the CLS staff and students who energetically and ably handled many of the logistical tasks for organization of this meeting. This is my last message as chair of the UAC. Tom Tiedje (Physics, UBC) takes over this role as of January 2003. It has been a pleasure to chair this committee of hard-working volunteers.
