1. 7th Annual Users' Meeting Success!
Contact: aanderso@stfx.ca
The Canadian Light Source 7th Annual Users' Meeting and Associated Workshops
were held at the University of Saskatchewan, November 17-21, 2004. The meeting
attracted a wide range of users and exhibitors, with a record setting total
attendance of 350 people from across Canada, North America and Internationally.
A report on the meeting will be available soon on the UAC pages at: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2004/highlights.php .
There was considerable interest in changing the date of the Annual Users
Meeting from the third week of November to early June (June 2nd for 2005).
In 2005 this would directly follow the 88th Canadian Chemistry Conference
and Exhibition held May 28th-June 1st in Saskatoon. Please vote for your
preference during the UAC elections starting December 8 and express your
opinions via an online discussion forum at http://www.lightsource.ca/forum prior
to the vote.

2. Election for new Users' Advisory Committee members- Be sure to vote!
Contact: Lavina Carter: clsuo@lightsource.ca
A request for you to participate in the Users' Advisory Committee (UAC)
online election will be distributed on December 8th. If you do not receive
a request to vote by email, please be sure to contact clsuo@lightsource.ca indicating
you intend to use the CLS in your research and therefore would like to have
the opportunity to vote on UAC representation.
The UAC provides advice to the Director on the operation and management
of the synchrotron and beamlines; represents the interests of CLS users;
provides feedback to CLS management on various aspects of the development
and operation of CLS; assists CLS in providing feedback to users about CLS-related
issues and plans, and hosts the CLS User's Meetings with assistance from
CLS.
Do not miss your opportunity to be involved in the decision making process!

3. Nanostructure Facility Established
Contact: klymyshyn@engr.usask.ca
Canada’s micro and nano technology industries are poised to benefit
from a $4.3 million investment in the new Canadian Synchrotron Nanostructures
Facility (CSNF) being established at the CLS. The X-ray lithography beamline,
officially known as the Canadian Synchrotron Nanostructures Facility (CSNF),
is essentially a "machine shop" to create structures with extremely small
features - 100 to 1,000 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair.
The facility will provide Canadian industry and scientists with their first
opportunity to fabricate micro-level, structurally superior devices that
will be used for a broad range of commercial applications, including biomedicine,
aerospace, communications and sensors.
Ralph Goodale, Minister of Finance on behalf of Stephen Owen, Minister of
Western Economic Diversification and Minister of State (Sport), and Saskatchewan
Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline announced on October 22nd the
governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are contributing a total of $3 million
over the next three years to establish and construct the CSNF. Equal contributions
of $1.5 million will be provided through the joint Canada-Saskatchewan Western
Economic Partnership Agreement (WEPA).
Rockwell Collins provided $315,000 and anticipates the research will enable
it to develop ever-smaller communications products. TRLabs committed an in-kind
contribution valued at $400,000 in staff resources for project management
and design expertise as well as equipment to establish the facility. VCom
Inc. invested $105,000 in the facility and anticipates utilizing the superior
calibre of nano-scale devices to be developed in future product lines.
"Rockwell Collins Canada is investing in the Canadian Synchrotron Nanostructures
Facility because it will allow the kind of world-class research that will
fuel innovation and provide real benefits to our industry," says Kevin Ferguson,
General Manager of Rockwell Collins Canada. "We believe the micro and nano
research that CLS will undertake represents the future of advanced communications
systems for use in aerospace and many other sectors."

4. New staff & now hiring
Contact: nancy.fetch@lightsource.ca
In the Engineering and Technical Services group, Ben Boyachek is now an
official CLS employee in our Machine Shop. Previously, Ben was contracted
to CLS from Nutana Machine for the last year, covering a sick leave.
In the Controls and Instrumentation group, Hao Zhang has been hired for
a new Control Systems Analyst/Engineer position. Hao moved from Regina, where
he completed his Masters degree from the University of Regina.
Kyle Sokul has been hired for a term position as an Inventory Control Assistant
in Purchasing/Receiving/Stores. Kyle is no stranger to CLS, as he was a summer
student for two years in addition to working casual hours as a student at
the U of S. As of January 1/05, Kyle will take time away from the U of S
to help us out until next fall, when he will be finishing his Bachelor of
Commerce degree.
