1. GENERAL USER PROPOSAL RESULTS: JULY-DECEMBER, 2009
Contact: mailto:clsuo@lightsource.ca

CLS held its seventh Peer Review Committee (PRC) meeting on April 17, chaired by Tony Van Buuren (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory). The PRC reviewed general user proposals for beam time requested for the July-December, 2009 period.

Six Phase I beamlines participated in this call. 84 new proposals were received, along with 31 beam time requests against existing proposals, for a total of 115.

The PRC rated the new proposals on a scale of one to five, one being the highest score. Beam time was allocated to 85 proposals based on each proposal's ranking in relation to all other proposals for a given beamline. A cut-off score was assigned if the total requests for beam time on a beamline exceeded the time available.

2. 12TH ANNUAL USERS' MEETING - EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE MAY 1ST!
Contact: mailto:clsuo@lightsource.ca

The Canadian Light Source Annual Users' Meeting will be held in Saskatoon, on June 17-18, 2009. The meeting is a great opportunity to learn about the progress of the Canadian Light Source, present your recent synchrotron work and meet fellow users. Register online now before the early registration deadline of May 1st!

This year’s meeting will feature a day of workshops on exciting new topics and scientific presentations, including a beamline and facility update, latest results from the CLS, young scientist talks, as well as a presentation from a High School Students on the Beamline group. Other events include a vendor exhibition, poster session, facility tour, and a banquet.

You are invited to present posters about your recent or planned synchrotron work. Submit your abstract before May 15: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2009/abstract.php

The Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation will again offer a prize for the best poster presented by a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow. The prize will be $1000 to support travel by the winner to attend a related conference of their choice in the coming year and present their work.
Limited funding is available for travel subsidies to students or post-docs attending the meeting, as well as attendees presenting a poster.

3. NEXT GENERATION X-RAY SOURCES WORKSHOP- MONTREAL, MAY 1, 2009
Contact: mailto:mark@physics.mcgill.ca

Around the world, several next generation X-ray sources are either under construction or being proposed. The Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation (CISR) is hosting a workshop to inform the Canadian community about the status and the exciting new science being proposed to take advantage of these new sources. One goal of the workshop is finding out about the community in Canada interested in such projects.

This workshop will highlight the energy recovery linacs (ERL), X-ray free electron lasers (XFEL), and laser induced X-ray sources. Topics will feature the science behind the new sources, source properties and the proposed new science they allow.

The workshop will be held Friday, May 1, 2009 in the Rutherford Physics Building, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec.

4. SCIENCE HIGHLIGHT: SHAPE TRANSITION IN VERY LARGE GERMANIUM ISLANDS ON SI(111)
Contact: mailto:rosei@emt.inrs.ca

Ge islands with areas up to hundreds of µm^2 were grown on Si(111). These islands, grown above 750 °C and at a deposition rate of 1 monolayer/min, become decreasingly compact with increasing size and can have nonuniform cross sections with heights reaching over 500 nm. The largest islands are ramified, often comprising multiple discrete parts. X-ray photoemission electron microscopy absorption maps show that the islands have a higher concentration of Ge at their centers, with more Si near the edges. We propose that the shape transformation is driven by strain relief at the island perimeters.
