1. First Publications Using Data from CLS!
Contact: tom.ellis@lightsource.ca

The CLS recently marked an important science achievement with the publication of the first research papers resulting from experiments performed at Canada's national synchrotron facility.

The research groups, whose papers appeared online the same day, are from the U of S and The University of Western Ontario.

"This is an important milestone for the CLS," says Research Director Thomas Ellis. "High quality science is always exciting. These two success stories in particular will always have a special meaning for us."

Register and submit your poster online by MAY 1st to save $$ at this year’s Annual Users Meeting taking place June 16-18, 2006. This meeting, organized by the Users' Advisory Committee of the Canadian Light Source, will be held in conjunction with the 3rd Northern Lights Summer Conference of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies June 14-16, 2006. The theme of the Northern Lights conference is “Shining Light on Biological Processes”.

You are invited to submit posters about your recent or planned synchrotron work. The Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation will again offer a prize for the best synchrotron related poster presented by a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow. The prize will be $1000 to support travel by the winner to attend a related conference of their choice in the coming year and present their work. Please register here: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2006/poster_submission.php

June 16th joint workshops will include:

  • Molecular Form & Function: Probing Intact Tissues using Synchrotron Light
  • Synchrotron Protein Crystallography
  • New Instrumentation for Soft X-ray Photon-In-Photon-Out Spectroscopy
  • Synchrotron and Advanced Analytical Techniques in the Forensic Sciences
  • Terahertz (THz) Workshop

The main meeting will feature talks highlighting CLS-based research activities including presentations by Helen Nichol (University of Saskatchewan), Allen Pratt (Natural Resources Canada), Jeanne Percival (Natural Resources Canada, Geological Survey of Canada), T.K. Sham (University of Western Ontario) and Regan Wilks (University of Saskatchewan).

As well, we have an exciting line-up of international speakers covering a wide range of hot scientific topics including: John Bargar (Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory), Giacomo Ghiringhelli (Politecnico di Milano) and Ralf-Hendrik Menk (Sincrotrone ELETTRA). From Canada’s thriving synchrotron community speakers include Andrea Damascelli (University of British Columbia) and Paul Scott (University of Alberta).

Featured also will be a special presentation on the subject of “Research Funding in Canada” by Isabelle Blain, Vice-President Research Grants and Scholarships, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

The CLS will host its first summer school from Aug. 1 to 4, 2006. The school aims to provide graduate, post-doctoral and senior undergraduate students with synchrotron-specific knowledge and skills applicable to their research.

In this first year, the program will cover topics such as the production and properties of synchrotron radiation, an overview of CLS current and future beamlines, and lectures on synchrotron applications to a number of scientific disciplines (protein crystallography, infra-red, photoemission spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy). Students will also obtain hands-on experience in data collection and data analysis.

Details, including registration information, are available at http://www.lightsource.ca/education/summerschool.

4. The 19th Canadian Symposium on Catalysis - May 14-17, Saskatoon

More than 150 delegates from across Canada and around the world will gather at the Delta Bessborough from May 14-17 for the 19th Symposium on Catalysis, "Building Catalytic Bridges Between Academy and Industry." The symposium features 110 presentations and about 40 posters covering a wide range of catalysis applications, from heavy oil and biofuels processing to hydrogen production for fuel cells, to plastics manufacturing and greenhouse gas reduction and other environmental applications.
