1. Queen Elizabeth II to visit CLS!

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh will visit the University of Saskatchewan’s Canadian Light Source synchrotron on Thursday, May 19 as part of the Royal Visit commemorating Saskatchewan’s centennial.

“We are honoured to be included in the Royal Visit and to have the opportunity to showcase our world-class research facilities and the cutting edge science we are doing in human, animal and plant studies,” says University of Saskatchewan Secretary, Gordon Barnhart. “The Canadian Light Source is a shining example of the University of Saskatchewan’s leadership in innovation and research.”

“Research at the Canadian Light Source will improve the quality of life of people around the world,” says CLS Executive Director William Thomlinson. “Like the people of this province, we are thrilled that Her Majesty is visiting this state-of-the-art facility that was designed and built in Saskatchewan.”

2. CLS Signs Contract with Synodon Inc.
Contact: jeff.cutler@lightsource.ca

The Canadian Light Source signed a contract with Synodon Inc of Edmonton. The agreement, signed April 14, is the first commercial contract that will be conducted on one of the synchrotron’s beamlines.

Previous commercial work carried out by CLS scientists used other synchrotrons in the USA and Great Britain.

For more information on Synodon go to: http://www.synodon.com/

CLSI proceeded with its Second Call for Proposals in April. Forty-two proposals were received and are currently in the Review stages. These proposals will be eligible for beam time for the scheduling period July 1 to December 31, 2005. This is an opportunity to conduct exploratory experiments during the commissioning phase of the CLS and its first suite of beamlines.

The second call included the following beamlines:

  • PGM - Variable Line Spacing Plane Grating Monochromator (5.5 - 250 eV)
  • SGM - High Resolution Spherical Grating Monochromator (230 - 1940 eV)
  • HXMA - Hard X-ray MicroAnalysis (5,000 - 40,000 eV)
  • Far IR - High Resolution Far Infrared Spectroscopy (4000 - 10 cm-1)
  • Mid IR - Mid IR Spectromicroscopy (6000 - 450 cm-1)

Scheduling for each of the beamlines will vary depending on the stage of machine development and status of commissioning. CLS will keep users updated on the progress of these activities. Participation in commissioning will be an integral part of early operation of the CLS.

4. Notes from the UAC- Users' Meeting November 18-20th, 2005
Contact: Michele.Loewen@nrc.ca

November 20th may still be a few months off, but planning for the 2005 Annual Users' Meeting is well underway.

If you are interested in holding an Associated Workshop to highlight your favorite field of synchrotron research or current and future beamlines at the CLS, the time to start planning is now! The User's Advisory Committee (UAC) will provide support for approved workshops, including space and food as well as funding up to $5,000. Contact the UAC TODAY for more details.

A reminder to the user community: Please visit the UAC pages on the CLS web site http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/ to keep informed on current events, carried motions, and UAC activities. As always, all users are encouraged to contact the UAC to ask questions or to voice their concerns regarding user issues.

Plan now to attend the 8th Annual Users' Meeting and Associated Workshops to be held November 18-20th, 2005, on the University of Saskatchewan campus.

5. Canadian Photoelectron Research Spectromicroscope
Contact: Stephen.urquhart@usask.ca

The Canadian Photoelectron Research Spectromicroscope (CaPeRS) and the PEEM staff scientist, Dr Uday Lanke, moved to the Canadian Light Source in mid-April, after a successful three year operation at the Synchrotron Radiation Center in Wisconsin. After recommissioning and technical integration at the CLS, initial operation is planned on the SGM and PGM beamlines and the SM beamline by the end of the year.

6. Frontiers in Bio-Metals: Probing Metal Ions in Biology with X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Saskatoon, May 11, 2005
Contact: ingrid.pickering@usask.ca

This workshop showcases X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) applications to study metals in biology and medicine. Since no previous knowledge of the technique is assumed, this is the perfect venue for researchers and students who are considering using the synchrotron in their research and would like to learn how XAS is applied. Although the workshop has a Bio-Metals theme, the techniques and proposed beamline facility will be relevant to a much wider community. To register for the workshop or to learn more about X-ray absorption spectroscopy visit http://www.lightsource.ca/bio-metals

The confirmed workshop speakers are a who’s who of XAS. The topics and techniques they will discuss have wide applicability in biology and medicine:

James Penner-Hahn, University of Michigan; Britt Hedman, Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratories; Ninian Blackburn, Oregon Graduate Institute; Peter Lay, University of Sydney, Australia; Robert Scott, University of Georgia; Ingrid Pickering, University of Saskatchewan; Graham George, University of Saskatchewan.

This workshop is being organized in support of a potential proposal for a new Phase III beamline facility for X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Canadian Light Source.
