1.      14TH ANNUAL CLS USERS' MEETING - EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE MAY 24TH!
Contact : clsuo@lightsource.ca

The Canadian Light Source Annual Users' Meeting will be held in Saskatoon, on June 24-25, 2011. The meeting is a great opportunity to learn about progress at the Canadian Light Source, present your recent synchrotron work and meet fellow users. Please register online NOW, before the early registration deadline of Tuesday, May 24th.

This year's event will feature a day of workshops on exciting new topics and scientific presentations including a beamline and facility update, latest results from the CLS, as well as talks by young scientists and guest speakers from around the globe.  Other events include a vendor exhibition, poster session with a wine and cheese reception, and a closing banquet.

You are invited to submit posters about your recent or planned synchrotron work. Submit your abstract before Monday, May 16: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2011/poster_session.php

This year the Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation (CISR) will offer three $300 prizes for the best synchrotron related posters, one for each of the following categories: Life Sciences, Environmental and Earth Sciences and Materials Science and Instrumentation, presented by a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow.

Funding is also available for travel subsidies to students or post-docs attending the meeting who are presenting a poster at the Annual Users' Meeting on June 25, 2011.

Visit our website for program and registration information:  http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2011/

We look forward to seeing you this June!

5.      RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT: SYNCHROTRON INFRARED RADIATION FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL EXTERNAL REFLECTION SPECTROSCOPY
Contact: ian.burgess@usask.ca

Synchrotron infrared radiation has been successfully coupled through an infrared (IR) microscope to a thin-cavity external reflectance cell to study the diffusion controlled redox of a ferrocyanide solution. Excellent signal-to-noise ratios were achieved even at aperture settings close to the diffraction limit. Comparisons of noise levels as a function of aperture size demonstrate that this can be attributed to the high brilliance of synchrotron radiation relative to a conventional thermal source. Time resolved spectroscopic studies of diffusion controlled redox behaviour have been measured and compared to purely electrochemical responses of the thin-cavity cell. Marked differences between the two measurements have been explained by analyzing diffusion in both the axial (linear) and radial dimensions. Whereas both terms contribute to the measured current and charge, only species that originate in the volume element above the electrode and diffuse in the direction perpendicular to the electrode surface are interrogated by IR radiation. Implications for the use of ultramicroelectrodes and synchrotron IR (SIR) to study electrochemical processes in the submillisecond time domain are discussed.

The work reported in this paper was conducted at the Mid-IR beamline 01B1-1 by researchers from the University of Saskatchewan's Department of Chemistry and the CLS IR beamline staff.

6.      ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR USERS' ADVISORY COMMITTEE (UAC) - DEADLINE JULY 4, 2011
Contact: sdesgren@uOttawa.ca

The Users' Advisory Committee (UAC) is seeking nominations from the CLS user community for the election of five new members for the September 2011 to August 2014 term. The UAC is currently composed of 12 members from various locations, disciplines, scientific sectors, and techniques. The committee would like to achieve a balanced representation of the user community. This year, five members are leaving the committee, and we would especially like to encourage diversity in terms of  broader national representation.  We would also like to encourage nominees from government or industrial sectors, as well as environmental and earth sciences communities, from across Canada.  To view current membership demographics, please go to   http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/election/

The UAC provides advice to the Executive Director on the operation and management of the synchrotron and beamlines; represents the interests of CLS users; provides feedback to CLS management on various aspects of the development and operation of CLS; assists CLS in providing feedback to users about CLS-related issues and plans, and hosts the CLS Users Meetings with assistance from CLS.

Details on current UAC membership, terms of reference, elections, past meeting minutes and meetings are available at http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/

Nominations will be accepted until Monday, July 4th, 2011.  Please forward your nominations to Derek Peak, UAC Vice Chair  (derek.peak@usask.ca), any member of the UAC (http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/membership.php) or clsuac@lightsource.ca.

We look forward to hearing from you!  Elections will be held July 19-23, 2011 and details regarding the election process are forthcoming.
