2. CLS Annual Users' Meeting- Early Bird Deadline May 1
Register online now: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2008/
The Canadian Light Source Annual Users' Meeting will be held in Saskatoon June 9-10, 2008. The meeting is a great opportunity to learn about the progress of the Canadian Light Source, present your recent synchrotron work and meet fellow users.
This years’ meeting will be held in conjunction with the Fifth International Workshop on Mechanical Engineering Design of Synchrotron Radiation Equipment and Instrumentation (MEDSI) and the Fifteenth Pan-American Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI) Conference June 10-13, 2008—joint workshops will be held on June 10.
Poster Session: You are invited to submit posters about your recent or planned synchrotron work. Submit your abstract before May 15: http://www.lightsource.ca/uac/meeting2008/abstract.php
The Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation will again offer a prize for the best synchrotron related poster presented by a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow. The prize will be $1000 to support travel by the winner to attend a related conference of their choice in the coming year and present their work.
Funding is available to provide travel subsidies to students or post-docs attending the meeting as well as attendees of the Annual Users' Meeting who present a poster.

3. Science Highlight: Spatial Complexity of Soil Organic Matter forms at Nanometre Scales
Contact: Johannes Lehmann at Mailto:CL273@cornell.edu
Soil has traditionally been viewed as a mixture of complex humic material and organic debris. Using the SGM beamline at the CLS and the X-ray spectromicroscopy beamline X1A1 at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), Cornell University researcher Johannes Lehmann has demonstrated that soil is in fact a collection of identifiable biopolymers arranged on and around mineral particles.
Lehmann’s team analyzed soil samples from locations around the world, both for the total carbon in the samples using the CLS and for intact microsamples of different soils using near edge X-ray spectromicroscopy at the NSLS. Surprisingly, they found that, while the results of the total carbon analyses were remarkably similar for soils samples from a variety of tropical and temperate environments, synchrotron X-ray spectromicroscopy could identify specific biopolymers at distinct locations within the soils. This suggests that where particular molecules are located in the soil could be critical to our understanding of how soil absorbs, stores and releases carbon in response to changes in ecology and climate.
The paper was published in the March 23, 2008 edition of Nature Geoscience.
