1. Results of Call for Proposals

CLS received 65 proposals, plus 21 renewals during the last Call for Proposals.
These are currently undergoing the review process.
- 021B1-1 (Far IR) - 4 proposals
- 06ID-1 (HXMA) - 20 proposals, plus 7 renewals
- 10ID-1 (SM) - 19 proposals
- 11ID-1 (SGM) - 13 proposals, plus 11 renewals
- 11ID-2 (PGM) - 9 proposals, plus 3 renewals
The Peer Review Committee (PRC) will meet in mid-May and applicants will be notified of the results thereafter.

2. CISR Synchrotron Usage Survey

The Canadian Institute for Synchrotron Radiation (CISR) invites you to participate in an online survey regarding synchrotron usage, both at the CLS and at out of country facilities. Results from this survey will be discussed at the CISR annual meeting to be held on Friday, June 15 in Saskatoon.

3. Phase II beamlines update

CLS staff made significant progress on Phase II beamline and building development this last month.
Accomplishments include:
- Completed installation of the remaining Phase II front-ends in the storage ring
- Completed assembly of 6 of 11 hutches – the remaining hutches are in transit
- The vendor for the VESPERS beamline has successfully completed the factory acceptance test
- The VESPERS monochromator has been assembled at CLS and is almost ready for testing
- The vendor for the SXRMB beamline monochromator has successfully completed the factory acceptance test
- ACIS system testing is starting the week of April 30 for both VESPERS and SXRMB
- Electrical service design and installation is progressing well
- Mechanical service design and installation is progressing well
- Control system hardware and software design is making good progress
- The REIXS monochromator is being fabricated for delivery in August
- The REIXS endstations at U of S and UBC are into the procurement phase
- The REIXS insertion device design is complete and ready for procurement
- The SyLMAND scanner is being fabricated, with delivery in June
- CMCF2 beamline procurement is finalized for delivery in January
- The CMCF2 robotic system is into procurement for assembly in June
- The BMIT wiggler is being fabricated for delivery in September
- The Phase II addition single-story area is open for hutch construction
- The BMIT structural slab and pits are complete
- The building main floor envelope is nearing completion
- The building second floor envelope is underway
- The 2.4 metre pit for the BMIT POE-2 is poured and complete
- The 4.0 metre pit for the BMIT SOE is poured and complete
- The structural slab for the BMIT beamline is complete
- The slab on grade for labs and offices is underway
- Mechanical and Electrical service installation is underway

Keynote Scientific speakers for the AUM include Janos Kirz (Advanced Light Source), Dean Chapman (University of Saskatchewan), Serge Desgreniers (Université d'Ottawa), Andrew MacMillan (University of Alberta), and Kenneth Kemner (Argonne National Laboratory).
Featured also will be a special presentation by Christine Fitzgerald, Executive Vice-President, Canadian Institutes of Health Research titled ‘The CLS – View from the CIHR’.
This year’s meeting will be held in conjunction with the 62nd Annual Congress of the Canadian Association of Physicists June 17-20, 2007—joint sessions will be held on June 17:

5. MASR 2007, Saskatoon – Registration Now Open!

The International Meeting for Medical Applications of Synchrotron Radiation (MASR) will be held August 26 – 30, 2007 in Saskatoon, Canada. Confirmed speakers include, Jacques Balosso (INSERM, France), Fulvia Arfelli (INFN, Italy), Alberto Bravin (ESRF, France), Diego Dreossi (INFN, Italy), Francois Esteve (INSERM, France), Ralf Menk (Elettra, Italy), Elisabeth Schültke (CLS, Canada) and Naoto Yagi (Spring-8, Japan).
Abstract submissions are invited for all techniques used to enhance better understanding, diagnosis and therapy of human or veterinary disease. Topics include technical basics, X-ray imaging, SAXS, IR microspectroscopy, pathology, oncology, radiation biology and radiology.

7. New staff & now hiring

CLSI welcomes Chamundi Selvaraj as receptionist. Chamundi comes to us with over 15 years of administrative experience and will be a wonderful asset to the Administrative and Finance Group. She has great passion for working with people and is very active in our community.
CLSI also welcomes Jennifer Robb, Industrial Science Research Associate. Jennifer has been hired for a one-year term position and will be working with the Business Development Group. Jennifer has worked in experimental research labs at several universities, including the Ultrafast Magneto-optic Laboratory at Dalhousie University, the High Intensity Gamma Source in the Free Electron Laser Laboratory at Duke University, and the Subatomic Physics Institute at the University of Saskatchewan.
