Saskatoon Synchrotron Summer School S4V Synchrotron Techniques in the Life Sciences June 13th - 18th, 2010

The Saskatoon Synchrotron Summer School is for researchers who wish to add synchrotron techniques to their research skill set. Information is presented through lectures, case studies, and practical, hands-on experience on beamlines in collecting and analyzing data.

Information for Summer School Students

The Fifth Annual CLS Summer School will be held in Saskatoon, June 13th to 18th, 2010.  Included in the school is the CLS Annual Users’ Meeting (AUM) and associated workshops on June 17th and 18th.  Application for the 2010 Summer School is closed.  We are unable to accept any new applicants.

Before Summer School Starts:

  • Register as a CLS User.  Becoming a User will allow you access to the CLS.  Register by June 1st .
  • Complete the online CLS Safety Training course.  Safety training must be completed in order to access the Experimental Floor. After you complete the new user registration above, the CLS User’s Office will send you a link to the safety training course.
  • Register and pay for the Summer School (including the AUM) here by May 10th
  • There is a wide variety of accommodation available, should you be visiting from out-of-town. You are responsible for making your own travel and accommodations. They are not included in your fees.
  • You may be required to attend a Beamline Safety Orientation. You will receive specific information regarding this via email.

While at Summer School:

  • On Sunday, June 13th, registration for Summer School will be open from 10:00 – 11:30am at the CLS main reception, which is located at the north side of the Canadian Light Source on the University of Saskatchewan campus. Lunch will be provided before the afternoon sessions start at the lecture theatre in VIDO (Vaccine & Infectious Disease Organization).
  • Monday - Wednesday, students will split into two streams following different programs:  Macromolecular Crystallography and Biomedical Imaging/X-ray/Infrared techniques.
  • Lunches and nutrition breaks will be provided. There are two evening meals offered through the school. On Monday you have the opportunity to visit the Western Development Museum’s Boom Town exhibition and enjoy a buffet supper. and Wednesday evening we will have supper at Boffin’s Club.
  • Both the school organizers and CLS’ Users Advisory Committee have prepared workshops for Thursday. You are welcome to attend any of them.
  • The Annual Users Meeting includes talks from various researchers and keynote speakers, and includes a poster session. We encourage you to submit a poster. There is a prize designated specifically for summer school participants. The deadline to submit your poster abstract is May 14th.
