St. Joseph’s High School - First students to conduct CLS synchrotron experiments!

St. Joseph High School

Grade eleven physics students were the first to participate in an experiment at CLS in June 2006 using x-ray absorption spectroscopy on soil samples collected and prepared by the students.

As this was the first time CLS collaborated with high school researchers, these students pioneered many safety and administrative protocols.

Students compared elemental spectra of their samples collected from 1) reclaimed fescue near their school, 2) natural grassland; from Montgomery (an inner city area of Saskatoon); 3) pasture land (Spiritwood, SK); 4) residential flower bed in Arbor Creek (relatively new area of Saskatoon); and 5 & 6) two samples from natural grassland supplied by Meewasin Valley Authority.
