These Physics 30 students visited the CLS in March 2009 to explore the composition of commercial mineral supplements and natural fruit juices to determine if there are differences in the minerals found in each sample. They used the SGM beamline to investigate the mineral content and chemistry of kiwi juice, blackberry juice, and a mineral supplement, and discovered that although there were similarities in some minerals found in both the juices and the mineral tablet, most of the tablet was made up of calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide filler and contained little active ingredients. They also identified minerals that were not listed on the label of active ingredients. This group has been invited to present their findings at the CLS Annual Users Meeting on June 18, 2009.
