The Bosworth Project 2010 has evolved into the Synchrotron Permafrost Project 2011. The Bosworth Creek project focusses on providing educational opportunities for local youth, establishing baselines, experiential science, curriculum development and local stewardship of habitat.? As part of that project, we used CLS to study the difference between the expected blue-green overflow ice, and the newly appearing yellow ice. Chemical information indicated permafrost as a potential source for this yellow ice, thus the Permafrost Project.
Samples of permafrost and residue from the yellow overflow ice were analyzed using X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) on the Spherical Grating Monochromator (SGM) beamline. Results indicated that it is unlikely the permafrost we sampled is the source of the ice we sampled, but did raise several other questions regarding the potential impacts permafrost chemistry might have on the surrounding environment.
