Three students from the Bosworth Creek area of the Northwest Territories participated in the Students on the Beamline program and conducted an experiment using the SGM beamline with CLS Assistant Director of Research, Robert Blyth and David Chevrier, Science Associate on SGM . Their research focused on the chemicals found in overflow ice, which is created when water wells up from underground and then freezes on top of creek ice in Northern Canada. This particular overflow ice is new to the area and may be a result of permafrost. It is different in colour and contains potentially toxic elements that are not found in normal overflow ice. The students’ results point to a need for further research and therefore these students are contemplating collaborating with government officials to continue the investigations.
