Mid IR Technical Assistant

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is the national synchrotron research facility on the University of Saskatchewan campus. This facility produces high intensity synchrotron light, millions of times brighter than sunlight, to explore the nature and structure of molecules. The synchrotron facilitates scientific research in the areas of health, advanced materials and the environment and serves national and international users from academia, industry and government institutions.
CLSI is currently receiving applications from post-secondary students for a summer student position on the Mid-Infrared beamline. The beamline is running a program in High-Resolution infrared spectromicroscopy studies of biological cells and tissues and Mid-Infrared studies of materials.
Depending on qualifications and interests the successful candidate may be involved in any number of the following projects:
- Assist with the design and testing of new micro-Photoacoustic cell
- Assist with installation and testing of encoders on microscope stage
- Design and order XYZ-stage for use with Photoacoustic cell in sample compartment
- Test 52X objectives on Focal Plane Array microscope
- Design and fabricate motorized condenser mirror support
- Design and fabricate thinner knife-edge apertures
- General Laboratory maintenance, assist with user support - i.e. Detector cryogenic cooling etc...
- Documentation of beamline procedures
- Maintain/upgrade the Mid IR website
Qualifications:
- 3rd or 4th year Physics, Physical Chemistry, or Engineering
- Knowledge of programming, design or data analysis software e.g. MATLAB, Igor, Excel, AutoCad
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical and/or optical design is a plus
- Ability to use hand tools and gauges, calipers, meters, read blueprints
- Good communication skills including writing and good record keeping
- Knowledge of Infrared Spectroscopy is an asset but not required
The position runs from May 1 to August 31, 2010. The wage rate per hour is consistent with the University of Saskatchewan, Undergraduate Student Assistant Rates. All applicants must be returning to school in the fall, as per the criteria of our summer student funding program.
