Dr. Josef Hormes is the Executive Director of the Canadian Light Source, Canada’s national synchrotron facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
From 1999 to 2006, Dr. Hormes was director of the Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD), at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, one of eight synchrotron radiation facilities in the United States, where he remains a full professor of research. He has co-authored over 200 scientific publications, supervised more than 30 Ph.D. theses and is named on seven patents. Much of his recent research has focused on the study, synthesis and characterization of magnetic nanoparticles for applications in cancer treatment, nanotechnology and environmental research.
He earned his Ph.D. and Habilitation in Physics from Bonn University where he was appointed assistant professor in 1979 and full professor in 1985. Dr. Hormes served as director of the Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory in Bonn from 1988 to 1999. He was also responsible for technology transfer and collaborations between the university and industry.
Dr. Hormes was a visiting scientist at Imperial College, London from 1982 to 1983, and a visiting professor at the University of Stockholm in 1984. He is an active member of several national scientific committees in Germany and the United States.
