Dr. Don Brooks has been UBC’s Associate Vice President Research, appointed by President Martha Piper, since June 1, 2001, and plays a leadership role in promoting research (federally and provincially), building research excellence, capacity and competitiveness at U.B.C. and developing institutional strategies for new initiatives. His activities have particular emphasis on new funding initiatives from CIHR, MSFHR, SSHRC, NSERC, CFI and Genome BC. The CFI/BCKDF Resource Office, the Health Research Resource Office and the four Coordinators for SSHRC, CIHR/MSFHR, NSERC and CFI report directly to him.

Dr. Brooks is a Physical Biochemist and Professor in the Departments of Chemistry and Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. His major current research interests are in surface and polymer chemistry, particularly in developing polymer constructs for biomedical applications, in which his group is a world leader. He has over 150 research publications, has edited four books and holds four U.S. patents. He received a 2002 Golden Jubilee Medal, the 2000 UBC Alumni Award for Research and has received recognition from NASA and the American Chemical Society for his research.

He represents the University as a member of the Boards of Directors of TRIUMF (committees: Executive; Finance; Technology Transfer and Director’s Search Committee), the Child & Family Research Institute of the BC Children’s Hospital, and the Research Advisory Committee of the Providence Health Research Institute. He is the Founding Chair of the Board of Management of the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics. He is a Senior Fellow of Green College and is particularly proud of organizing over 55 wine tastings from the College’s famous B.C. wine collection, which he founded.
