Dr. Katherine Bergman has a Ph.D. in Geology from McMaster University (1987).  She also has a M.Sc. in Geology from McMaster University (1983) and an Honours B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Waterloo (1981).  She was Dean of Science at the University of Regina from January 1, 2000 to February 28, 2008, where she played a leadership role in the promotion of scientific teaching and research, building scientific research capacity and excellence, and developing faculty strategies to capitalize on new initiatives.  Katherine was appointed as Special Advisor to the President (Nursing) on March 1st, 2009.  In this role, she will be establishing a new partnership with the Saskatchewan Institute for Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) to develop a new Collaborative Nursing Program.

Dr. Bergman is a professor in the Department of Geology.  Her research interest is in the subsurface of southern Saskatchewan, examining the Winnipegosis and Prairie Evaporite formations, which record the transition of the Devonian Elk Point Basin from fully marine to dessication.  The diagenetic history of these deposits was examined in the context of the sequence stratigraphic framework proposed for the Elk Point Group, and the effect on both the reservoir potential in the Winnipegosis carbonate and Ratner laminate, and the potential impact on Potash distribution.

She has represented the University on several other boards, including Canadian Council of Deans of Science (President and Past President), TRIUMF (Tri University Meson Facility), ACURA (Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy), NRTEE (National Round Table on Economy and Environment) and the Saskatchewan Registered Nursing Association (Chair, Education Approval Committee).  She is currently serving on the board (finance committee member) of the Pacific Institute of Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), the Virtual Science Fair, Canadian Council of Deans of Science (Treasurer) and the Saskatchewan Science Centre (Treasurer).
