Summer Student Employment Opportunity
Industrial Science Research Assistant
Job No. 747
The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is one of the leading 3rd generation synchrotron radiation facilities in the world, located on the University of Saskatchewan campus. The CLS will help to facilitate scientific research aimed at finding Canadian solutions for global challenges in health, advanced materials and the environment. CLS currently has an opportunity for a post-secondary student to work from May 1, 2014 to August 29, 2014 with the Industrial Science team on the IDEAS beamline.
This project will involve looking at data collection and quality from the IDEAS beamline. As IDEAS moves into a commissioning phase, a number of experiments must be conducted to look at the capabilities and limitations of the beamline. This information will help the industrial science team determine which experiments currently conducted on high demand beamlines can be carried out on IDEAS with a reasonable level of confidence in the results.
As a member of the Industrial Science team, the student will work directly with team members and learn several research techniques including SEM, Raman and Infrared spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and X-ray absorbance spectroscopy. The student will be responsible for data collection as well as data processing. The end result will be the creation of a spectral reference library. In addition, the student may have the opportunity to gain experience at other research facilities located on the U of S campus.
Qualifications: Applicants should be entering one of their final two years of study in a B.Sc., preferably in Chemistry or Geochemistry. Knowledge of basic spectroscopy is an asset. Strong record keeping habits and writing skills are required, as is the ability to work independently.
Remuneration is consistent with the University of Saskatchewan Undergraduate Student Assistant Rates.
Please submit your application to firstname.lastname@example.org by sending a cover letter and resume outlining your qualifications and a list of three references. Please identify in the subject line the position and posting number you are applying for. The deadline for applications is March 14, 2014. Applications may be considered after the deadline until the position is filled.
